ACAPULCO, MEXICO “I had recently bought a drone, and I wanted to practice with it, so I went to the beach and took some great footage of palm trees, beaches and anything interesting from above. Like all of my pictures, it was not planned at all. In my opinion, the place makes the moment. I find it very inspiring knowing that I might not be there again, so in order to make it perfect, I must make the best of it and adapt to that moment. To be honest, I never thought of it as a great shot – it was just pure practice, but it does feel pleasant that other people find it great. It means I did it right.” – Pablo García Saldaña, Mexican travelling the world

ALGARVE, PORTUGAL “This photo was taken with a DJI drone on a trip to Portugal, where I went to photograph the rocky coast and caves. It had been raining heavily late that afternoon, and at one point it stopped raining for a short while. Right then, the clouds opened up to an amazing sunset. I flew the drone out to take pictures of the sunset, and as I flew it back spotted the harbour and the opportunity to capture its layout from above. A lot of people (when viewing it on Instagram) don’t realise right away that it’s a harbour with boats. The layout is almost too perfect for the brain to instantly grasp what it is.” – Geran de Klerk, South African living in Sweden

DAWKI, INDIA “This lake is known as the clearest lake, so much that the boats seem to float on top. I took the shot from an overhead hanging bridge. This shot was planned, and it took exactly 2 hours for everything to come together – the boats had to be perfectly under the bridge, with the light not creating any shadows. Personally I like the composition of the photo and the flow of the water water; everything looks simple, and just as it should be for a daily scene on the clear waters of Dawki.” – Sayan Nath, India

FAGARAS MOUNTAINS, ROMANIA “This shot was taken from the highest peak in Romania, Moldoveanu Peak (2544 m). The view from there is overwhelming, especially when you have to work hard to get there – an 8 hour hike. In the photo, I really like the sunny crest that guides the viewer’s attention to the main subject, the mountain refuge. I’m glad I managed to include three silhouettes (I had to wait for them to come into the frame), as they give a very good sense of scale to the other elements of the shot. I also enjoy that the sunny side of the mountain is friendly, with a path and refuge, while the shaded side is rough and steep.” – David Marcu, Romania

FLORIDA, USA “This photo was taken at Fort Lauderdale Beach with my Phantom 4 drone. I usually look for colour in photos, so once I saw a brightly coloured umbrella alone, I knew I needed to take the photo. What impressed me about this above shot is that so much is happening, but there’s one separate umbrella alone and different than the rest! Its uniqueness is what stands out to me.” – Lance Asper, USA

IGUAZÚ FALLS, BRAZIL “I’m a hobby photographer – I just take pictures because I enjoy it. This particular shot was taken from a helicopter flying over the falls. I took at least 50 photos, and couldn’t really tell which was the best until later on when I put them on my computer.” – Monika Neumann, Germany

ISTANBUL, TURKEY “I was on a weekend trip to Istanbul that day. I took this photo in Istanbul Sapphire Mall, the highest building in the city. I was waiting to get a ticket for the observation terrace. I was on the 5th or 7th floor and just looked down from the hall and saw that café from that perspective and it looked perfect to me. The shot come to my hand and it all happened instantly.” – Abdullah Öğük, Turkey

LILLEHAMMER, NORWAY “This shot was taken with a drone (Dji Phantom 4) in the countryside near a small Norwegian city. I’ve been driving on this particular road for several years, but I had never thought about photographing this part of it. Once I had planned the shoot, I had to wait 3 days before the moment I had been waiting for finally came: a beautiful and clear sunset. The most impressive thing for me was that I managed to frame two cars so perfectly. I had been standing by the road for more than 10 minutes without even one car passing by, so to get two cars at the exact same time was really great. I also really love how clear the road leads you from left to right, and opposite, and then the soft trees standing by.” – Amund Meier, Norwegian living in Sweden

LONDON, ENGLAND “This photo was taken from a pod on the London Eye. I was with my husband and we were celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary. It was a rare opportunity to take a photo looking down on so many people enjoying a summer day in the sunshine in London. I love how the pathway forms a beautiful curve running through the photo, with the contrast of the lush green grass and the shadows. You can even see the shadow of the London Eye falling across the centre of the photo. I also like the groups of people, sitting and walking, all forming their own interesting little compositions.” – Barbara Pilgrim, United Kingdom

MICHIGAN, USA “This shot was captured at Seven Lakes State Park in Michigan with my Phantom 3 drone. I try to shoot sunrise aerial shots on my day off, and I was excited to fly over the water because it was amazingly clear. I can’t say that I knew it was a great shot instantly, but I really liked the colours! I have about 25 minutes on a drone battery, so when I’m flying, I don’t usually evaluate my images till I land. I would definitely say the colours were attractive, and the mist on the water added a nice texture.” – Aaron Burden, USA

MONTREAL, CANADA “This is a picture of St. Catherine street in Montreal. The sun was setting and the weather was so good and windless, so I flew my drone and shot this! Most of the time, aerial pictures above the cities are framed aligning the street lines; all the lines are horizontal and vertical. I tried to rotate everything and put an X in the centre instead of a cross shape. I got like 200 shots from my flight and chose the best one. Most of the time, you don’t really know how good a shot is until you edit it. The job is done when the edit is done!” – Amir Saboury, Iranian living in Canada

NAPA VALLEY, USA “The photo was taken a bit northeast of Yountville, where I was on holiday to celebrate my wife’s 30th birthday. I was on one of the 4 hot air balloons flying that day, that’s how I got the shot. The centring of the subject is something I really liked – the colours really pop. Also I managed to get the horizon in the last top third of the picture, creating a very beautiful gradient, starting by the lake at the bottom, followed by the yellow grass climbing up the hills in the background. There’s a natural and beautiful progression, the image flows easily and is naturally warm, bathed in the morning sun. It also brings out the morning haze nicely, giving depth.” – Sebastien Gabriel, French living in USA

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC “This photo was taken from the top of the south tower of St. Vitus Cathedral in the Prague Castle complex during a spontaneous 4-day getaway. No drones involved, just 297 old-fashioned steps up a claustrophobic spiral staircase to get to the viewing platform. The bride naturally became a focal point in her white dress among a sea of monochromatic grey tiles and dark jackets. Then it was just matter of waiting for the bridal pair to pose to have their own photo taken. In terms of framing, I ended up going with the cathedral tower I was in, as the Gothic architecture provided a foreground that juxtaposed the more minimalistic top-down view while providing some context as to how and from where the picture was taken.” – Stijn te Strake, Dutch/Australian living in New Zealand

SHANGHAI, CHINA “I took this shot of a famous multi-level interchange in the downtown of Shanghai on my DJI Phantom 3 Advanced. I’m always nervous flying a drone, because it’s never obvious when it’s absolutely safe, so I found a hidden open area close to the spot and piloted from there while my kid was playing around. It was chilly, but I successfully used 2 batteries and flew up to 500m high and shot videos and stills of the interchange and nearby skyscrapers. This photo, taken at 320m altitude, ended up the most successful with the best lighting. What impressed me is the complexity of the interchange, the beauty of curves and never-ending flow of vehicles.” – Denys Nevozhai, Ukrainian living in USA

SKÓGAFOSS WATERFALL, ICELAND “This shot was taken while my wife and I were on holiday and were filming for a local tour company. I had just purchased the DJI Phantom 4 drone and was excited to take it out and use it at the waterfall. Flying around, I tried to capture the unique angles of the falls while keeping the scale in perspective, and the thing that still impresses me about this shot is the scale. It’s hard to understand the magnitude of Skógafoss (nearly 60m high) and the rush of the water coming down onto the ground below. Looking back on it, you really see how small the people are and the greatness of how massive the waterfall is. To this day, this photo takes me right to being at those falls.” – Brian Botos, USA

I’ve been exploring the endless wetlands here and am captivated by how much colour and diversity you can find in each one. The shot wasn’t planned, but the destination was. I’m finding more and more that you can’t plan perfect moments. My best shots come from chance encounters.” – Jason Schuller, USA
