From stylish bean bags to bunk beds – not only does this furniture let your child play, dream, explore and imagine, it might even instil in them a love for top-notch design. [Photo: Mineminekids]
Classics For Minis – Practical, but plain ugly: just the look of lots of children’s furniture is enough to make any design-minded parent cringe. You don’t have to lower your standards with these mini versions of modern classics, such as the Barcelona Chair (Mies van der Rohe), the Lou Lou Ghost Chair (Philippe Starck) or the Panton Chair (Verner Panton).
The Beanbag, Reinvented – While we dig a children’s designer chair, you need something fluffier and more comfy when evening story time comes around. A beanbag does that trick neatly, but it can also be a lump that brings no joy; the colourful Baloon by French designer Florence Jaffrain makes everybody smile, over and over again.
Simple Makeover– While this year it might be ALL pink, your child could develop a penchant for stripes the next year, or even crocodiles for all you know. Accommodate his or her capricious tastes with a simple change of wallpaper. One of the retro designs by Dutch Studio Ditte will be a sure winner with kids and adults alike.
Round And Round – Functional and beautiful, this table with 4 stools for your kids (and their friends) can be used to draw and play on, as well as played with, as fun geometric shapes. Featuring unpretentious Scandinavian design language, Circle is made of durable laminated birch plywood and available in pink, white, yellow and blue.
Jolly Good – Happy cats, dogs and fun little pompons: all great “Reasons to be Jolly”, which is also the brand name of these throw pillows. They’ll brighten up any room, plus they’re great to cuddle up with.
A House For Everything – A doll’s house or a cabinet? Both! Part of the FLISAT series for children, Swedish furniture giant Ikea demonstrates that good design can be extremely affordable. It’s executed in simple, yet stylish, durable solid pine.
Oohoo – Akira the owl keeps a close watch at night. Though this nightlight is made of handcrafted vinyl, the designer shaped it to resemble a classic stone sculpture and give off a soft, soothing light. The company, Goodnight Light, has more brilliant lamps in its collection, such as ‘paper’ boats, robots and cacti.
Treehouse Dream – Who hasn’t dreamt of snoozing high up in the trees? This bed is ideal for treetop reading, sleeping, dreaming and playing, minus the risk of falling down and waking up. [Photo: Mineminekids]
Developing Style – Yep, those little ones grow. Like crazy. A nursery is outgrown in a matter of years, but with the sustainable range Illa by Teehee, furniture can grow with your child: the crib turns into a bed or a couch, and the changing table turns into a desk. It also contains storage space.
Full Display – Cars, books, precious trinkets: everything finds its place with these customisable pegboards. Each board has 4 long pegs as shelf supports and 2 for hanging items, and they can be mixed and matched in any possible way. Great for creating a mini-exhibition of favourite items.
Shelve It – When picture books are front-facing, it’s easier for kids to pick the book they want to read, and because the shelves of Booksee are transparent, the covers instantly make for lovely decoration. Line an entire wall with them to make a brilliant feature in the room.
Bunking Up – When city-dwelling families choose location over space, siblings might need to share a room. Or they may simply choose to, because it’s that much more fun – even more so with the RaFa bunk bed. Part of a furniture series designed by an architect couple who started creating children’s furniture after their sons were born, the beds are supplemented by shelves, bedside tables and other gorgeous items.
