Summer X Games, June 13-16: Minneapolis, Minnesota. The X Games is an annual sporting event focusing on extreme sports and managed by the American sports colossus ESPN. While the X Games are going on, there’s also the X Fest, a music festival offering live music, interactive elements and autograph sessions at which you can get a photo with some of your favourite skaters, Motocross riders, BMX bikers and rock stars. 24 Hours of Le Mans
The 24 Hours of Le Mans, June 17-18: Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France. If Formula 1 is a sprint, then this is a marathon: the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the world’s oldest active sports car endurance race, held every year since 1923 near the town of Le Mans. Maccabiah Games
Maccabiah Games, July 4-18: Tel Aviv, Israel. Often referred to as the “Jewish Olympics”, the Maccabiah Games were first held in 1932 and have since become one of the largest sporting events there is. The 19th Maccabiah Games in 2013 brought together 9,000 athletes from 78 countries, making it the third-largest international sporting event in the world behind the Olympics and Asian Games. World Aquatics Championships
World Aquatics Championships, July 14-30: Budapest, Hungary. The world championships for aquatic sports include swimming, diving, high diving, open water swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo. They’re held every 2 years, and this year they will take place in Budapest, where gifted athletes will try to break multiple world records and shine in the absence of the great Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time. The World Games
The World Games, July 20-30: Wroclaw, Poland. The World Games could be described as the alternative Olympics, or to be more accurate, an international multi-sport event for non-Olympic sports. First held in 1981 with athletes from just 58 countries, this year more than 3,000 athletes from 105 countries are expected to participate in the 10th Games in sports that include powerlifting, tug of war, karate, billiards, flying disc and sumo wrestling, among others. Francophone Games
Francophone Games, July 21-30: Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Often compared to the Commonwealth Games, the Francophone Games are a lesser-known series of sports and arts events in which French-speaking nations have participated every four years since they first began 1989. Traditional sports such as boxing, tennis, basketball and African wrestling, as well as painting, poetry, storytelling and sculpture contests, fill the Games’ 10-day schedule.

World Police and Fire Games
World Police and Fire Games, August 5-18: Los Angeles, California. A multisport event in which active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel from all over the world gather to compete in various athletic competitions, the World Police and Fire Games take place every other year. Due to a recent dispute, the host city hasn’t been officially designated yet, but LA looks to be the favourite.

Invictus Games
Invictus Games, September 23-30: Toronto, Canada. The Invictus Games are a fresh multisport competition for disabled and injured soldiers. Some of the most popular events include wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball and indoor rowing. Prince Harry introduced the event back in March 2014 at London’s Copper Box Arena, and the first Games was held that same year in September. Intellectual Fight Club
Intellectual Fight Club VIII, June 2: Berlin, Germany. Chessboxing is a unique and bizarre mix of contrasting skills, where the physical strength of boxing meets the mental concentration of chess. It also happens to be one of our favorite niche sports, and we suggest it to anyone who’s intrigued by the paradoxes of life. Intellectual Fight Club is a series of urban amateur chessboxing events that were launched two years ago, and have been attracting an ever-growing fan base. If you’re interested in seeing how Garry Kasparov’s chess strategy and Rocky Marciano’s “murderous” punches blend in a single event, head to Berlin on June 2.

The Soapbox Race
The Soapbox Race, July 16: Los Angeles, California. You might know all about Formula 1, the World Rally Championship and NASCAR, but if you’re not aware of the Soapbox Race, then you don’t know what you’re missing.
