THE SYMBOL OF TRADITION – A poncho-style garment originating in the Andes, the ruana is deeply woven into Colombian history and tradition. In today’s fashion world, where the ongoing trend for ponchos and capes appears to be unstoppable, the ruana represents the original, authentic template: Colombians can be proud to wear a garment that might be called a ‘trend’ elsewhere, but here is part of their roots. This warming outer garment is originally from the cooler Andean region and consists of a square or rectangular four-pointed blanket made of 100% virgin wool, with a hole in the centre for the head. Although the ruana is characteristic of the inhabitants of the Cundiboyacense highlands, it can also be found in other places such as Pasto, Antioquia and Caldas. However, its true source is Nobsa, in Boyacá, where you’ll find both modern and traditional weaves of a quality that also ensures their export to Italy, Spain, the United States and beyond. THE ARTIST – A native of Bogotá, but currently living in Bergen, Norway, the artist Ícaro Zorbar has earned his position as one of the country’s most prominent emerging artists. His work is characterised by the integration of technological ‘junk’ and devices, whether digital or analogue, to symbolise the artificial nature of the technical and the human traits implicit in the machine; some of Zorbar’s installations have a performance character and require human interaction to activate them. The artist has exhibited his work in such illustrious venues as the New Museum in New York, at the 30th São Paulo Biennial and the Museum of Modern Art in Bologna. Currently, Zorbar is showing Extrañando al fantasma [‘Missing the Ghost’], the biggest exhibition of his career so far, at the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá (MAMBO).

THE MUSICAL GENRE – Love it or hate it, reggaeton is here to stay. It has conquered the world with its irresistible rhythms that invite you to get up and dance – and then keep on dancing. Even a cursory glance at music services like Spotify reveals that singers like J Balvin, Maluma, Sebastián Yatra, Manuel Turizo and Karol G are all starring on worldwide charts. Although the rhythms of reggaeton first emerged in Puerto Rico, Colombians are now shaping the genre by blending it with elements of pop, electronic music and even Colombian folk music to form a new global sound. Among them, J Balvin is the undisputed king of the genre, with his magic touch seemingly turning every track to gold. His signature song “Mi Gente” [“My People”] was number one in more than 30 countries around the world and has accumulated over two billion plays on YouTube.
