It’s the time of year for renewal and reinvigoration – and we want our viewing material to reflect the energising mood. Turning to bright colours and uplifting themes after the darkness of the winter months, we offer our recommendations for TV shows that will inspire you to blossom this spring.
The Great British Bake Off – Now in its 15th year, The Great British Bake Off is now as much a British institution as Buckingham Palace and drizzly weather. A charming yet demanding baking contest set during the spring and summer – usually in a tent on the grounds of a gloriously colourful country manor – it’s the ultimate comfort viewing. While much of reality TV today emphasises conflict and drama, this series celebrates mutual support and the overcoming of obstacles. It may even encourage you to finally take on that big spring project!
Bridgerton – Even if this hit show were only to feature elegant people in gorgeous gowns promenading in beautiful gardens, Bridgerton would already feel like the perfect show for springtime. But in addition to the lush visuals, it also follows an array of unfolding love stories, focusing on a different couple every season – and what feels more exciting and revitalising than a budding romance? Indeed, fans the world over can’t get enough of the tears, trials and eventual triumphs of Regency socialites seeking their one true love.
New Girl – ‘Optimism’ is surely one of the most apt words to describe spring’s rosy vibes, and there are few better examples of walking optimism than Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel), the perky, upbeat young woman who moves into an apartment with three neurotic, cynical LA men. No matter what Jessica goes through in the show, she always seems to begin each episode with an infectiously hopeful attitude, thriving on the belief that everything will turn out alright in the end. There are rumours of a reboot, given the show’s newfound audience on streaming, so catch up now!
The Good Place – One thing the changing of the seasons teaches us is that it’s never too late to start over, and this endearing show – about a woman who has lived a dishonest life and now finds herself in the afterlife – repeatedly teaches the value of reconciling with the past in order to better oneself in the future. Just as the grey skies and bare trees of winter lead to the bloom and revival of spring, this funny sitcom tells us that, no matter how bad things might seem, change is on the way.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – Spring can be a time for reinvention, for discovering who you really are and living unapologetically. So, why not take some inspiration from Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), a wealthy 1950s New York socialite who discovers she has a knack for stand-up comedy – a pursuit that goes against the expectations of her gender and social standing at the time. Gleeful and good-natured, this show is about embracing whatever it is that makes your heart sing, motivating you to get out there and do whatever fulfils you most.
Cable Girls – Another series focused on women finding their independence, this Spanish-language show is a delight and, at five seasons, effortlessly binge-able! Set in the late 1920s, it follows the lives of four women who take a job at a Madrid telephone exchange, connecting callers to their destinations. Each has her own reasons for coming to work, and they all slowly begin to form a bond that helps them break free of their problems. Centred around the theme of renewal and new beginnings, the show’s captivating storylines are matched with stunning shots of Madrid that will make you want to plan a city break!
Rosemary & Thyme – A murder mystery show may not sound too cheery, but this British mystery series about two crime-solving gardeners is as cosy as it gets. Stars Pam Ferris and Felicity Kendal make a terrific duo cracking light-hearted cases, surrounded by the lush greenery of the idyllic English countryside that makes every episode feel like the first day of spring. If you love tongue-in-cheek mystery shows like Murder She Wrote, this is one for you.
The Hook Up Plan – Sometimes you need a fresh start, and that’s exactly what this French romantic comedy has to offer. Still hung up on her ex, Else (Zita Hanrot) feels stuck in love. In an attempt to break free from this dead-end relationship, her friends secretly hire a man to take her out on dates and remind her of what’s possible in life and love. Spanning three seasons and a 2020 special, the show’s playful, humorous tone brings out the bright side of life while guaranteeing a good laugh in every instalment.
Schmigadoon! – Is there someone in your life who could use a little razzle-dazzle? The first season of this contagiously optimistic TV show will put a spring in their step. It follows a couple who are looking to revive their relationship, only to walk into an enchanted town where everyone is in a musical. The problem is, one loves show tunes and the other hates them! Nothing lifts the spirits quite like bursting into song, and while the second season is a tiny bit darker, its debut is filled with sunshine.
All Creatures Great and Small – Based on the novels by English author James Herriot, this period piece sees a trio of veterinarians in 1930s Britain dealing with life, handling love and healing adorable animals. And what’s more spring-y than baby animals?! Visual elements aside, the storytelling encapsulates the hopeful feeling of the season, and there’s a warmth to every episode, with the characters working together to solve any problems they face. There’s also an adaptation of the books from the 1990s, but this 2020 interpretation gets our vote!
