Skateboarding is so much more than a sport, a mode of transport or a performance art. It is, in short, a lifestyle. Much like the surfer look, skater style is full of design references that have become mainstream, making it easy to wear your favourite hobby on your sleeve. However, dressing in baggy pants, checkerboard Vans and a Carhartt cap is only one way to surround yourself with skater design. The other is to integrate the actual decks into your everyday life. We’ve collected a list of our favourite skateboard-inspired, upcycled and repurposed interiors, accessories and even musical instruments…

When you think of skater luggage, the first thing that comes to mind is probably not a hardshell carry-on suitcase. Boarders and skaters have traditionally favoured more casual carryalls and sports bags, while sensible yet boring suitcases were reserved for the business travel brigade. Floyd, a fledgling luggage brand inspired by 1970s skater culture, has decided to mix it up and bring modern travellers the best of both worlds. Their suitcases are both practical and cool, neat and funky – as perfect for the business traveller who wants to stand out from the crowd as they are handy for the globetrotting pro skater sick of lugging an unwieldy sports bag around. Electric guitars handcrafted from old skateboard decks fit into a pretty specific niche in the market, but one that makes a lot of sense. After all, the overlap between skaters and rockers is significant and meaningful. Prisma Guitars collects used skateboards and turns them into guitars in Southern California. You can hear what the resulting instruments sound like in the ‘Shop Sessions’ video series, and find a list of musicians that play them on the company’s website. If a custom-built guitar is out of your price range, you can at least get started with a wooden guitar pick.

Canadian design studio AdrianMartinus elegantly navigates the line between art, craft and design. Brothers Adrian and Martinus Pool, both carpenters, make handcrafted, custom-built furniture, art and homewares – all exquisitely finished, but with restrained shapes and lines that let the material and its colours do the talking. Thanks to the wide range of products on offer, from small stud earrings to stunning inlaid coffee tables, there’s something for every budget. [Photo: AdrianMartinus via Facebook]

La Fabrik du Hérissonis a French vintage shop selling all manner of gorgeous, unique interiors. Many of the quirky items, sold through Etsy and similar platforms, are simply beautiful finds, sourced from flea markets and local treasure troves that will remain the secret of the proprietor, while others are refurbished, upcycled and improved, often with parts from other vintage items. The ‘Coat Racks’ section offers regular and refurbished vintage pieces, as well as racks made from tennis rackets and skateboards. Each piece is lovingly painted and adorned with unique hooks, creating a look that is equal parts ‘cute’ and ‘street’. [Photo: La Fabric du Hérisson via Etsy]

Skate Home, another French online vendor that sells skateboard coat racks, will appeal less to vintage lovers, but equally – if not more – to those seeking a broad range of skater style. The decks used are new and the designs less diverse. The racks do, however, come in a huge range of colours, designs, and even different sizes, so you are virtually guaranteed to find one that fits your space and the design or colour scheme of your home. Looking for a monochrome solution to blend in with your colour scheme, a fun cartoon look or a romantic flower pattern? This shop has you covered! [Photo: Skate Home]

Most furniture designs made from used skateboards simply add legs, hooks or other functional elements to the deck. Deckstool Skate or Design takes things one step further, building entire coffee tables and stools out of several broken decks each. The result is an eclectic and colourful patchwork look that creates a visual focus, especially in contrast with minimalist furniture and colour schemes. [Photos: Deckstool via Facebook]

Want to instil a love of skateboards and DIY in your kids at an early age? Let them help you turn some old decks into a little kiddie table. Indie Pop Shop, based in Hawaii, used to make and sell the adorable Children’s Skateboard Picnic Table, but the finished product is currently not available. What is it about skateboard design shops from France? 7Plis make all kinds of cool and colourful accessories out of old skateboards, like jewellery, watches, pens, glasses and even USB sticks. Our favourite item from their online shop, however, is the devastatingly dapper bow tie… for those occasions when you want to let your skater style shine through, even though formal attire is required. Hands-down the most common second career for upcycled skateboards is in the jewellery industry. Trawling maker’s markets, creative online shops or upcycling shops, you will regularly come across rings, earrings, bracelets, necklace pendants and other trinkets featuring the distinctive candy-striped wood. BoardThing, based in Kraków, Poland, stand out due to the glossy finish on their rings and the option to have the silver interior band engraved, for example as a wedding ring. Along with jewellery, recycled skateboard glasses are probably the most widely available skate design item. We like Woodzee sunglasses, “crafted from repurposed and recycled skateboard decks” in California, but you can probably find a design shop or Etsy store near you that makes them locally – adding to both the street cred and the green cred of your purchase. If these or similar very normal-looking sunglasses that just happen to be made from old skateboards are a little TOO normal for your liking, perhaps the hand-carved skate goggles by Florida-based artist Thomas Phillips are a better fit? Part Mad Max: Fury Road, part Tank Girl and a dash of Riot Grrrl attitude via Linda Perry (of Four Non Blondes fame), these funky shades are giving us a serious case of 1990s nostalgia. To add a skater touch to seasonal celebrations, decorate your tree with ornaments made from broken, upcycled skateboards. The shapes made from the broken decks result in a marbled effect, with the layers of colour coming through in different places.
