England: Happy Go Lucky (2008) – Played by Sally Hawkins (Paddington, The Shape of Water), It’s impossible not to fall in love with Poppy – a London schoolteacher who always looks on the bright side of life. However, her sunny disposition is at odds with the people in her life, who view her as irresponsible. A rare departure for Mike Leigh, famous for searing personal dramas like the Oscar-nominated Secrets & Lies, it’s a great film that illustrates the importance of a positive mindset – showing us that being cheerful doesn’t mean ignoring the uglier side of life, but rather working through it.

Wales: Dream Horse (2020) – Based on the remarkable documentary Dark Horse, this comedy-drama is inspired by the true story of a small Welsh town that came together to buy a racehorse, named Dream Alliance, who made waves in the traditionally exclusive world of horse racing.
