As the craft Belgian brewing scene thrives and industry pioneers diminish the idea of ‘beer connoisseur’ as an oxymoron, you might say we’re living in a golden age for beer. Toast our happy times at these suds-soaked festivals across the globe.

Oktoberfest, Munich: Set against a backdrop of Bavarian mountains, since 1810 Munich’s Oktoberfest has drawn punters to sample frothy local brews by the litre. Despite charges of commercialisation, with 6 million visitors each year Oktoberfest continues to merit its spot at number one. oktoberfest.de
Pilsner Fest, Pilsen: Since the birth of Pilsner Urquell over 200 years ago, the Czech city of Pilsen has celebrated its creation each October. With sharp pinnacles rising above the waves of terracotta roofs, this is one of the most idyllic settings to quaff a continuous supply of pale ale. plzen2015.cz

Oregon Brewers Festival, Portland: Due to the host state brewing more craft beer than any other, the Oregon Brewers Festival has a predominantly local flavour. 26 years old, and now spanning 5 days, those visiting this festival with a European palate will be able to find Belgians and Pilsners on offer, too. oregonbrewfest.com
Belgian Beer Weekend, Brussels: Hosted in the Grand Marché, Belgian Beer Weekend is a cacophony of pageantry and celebration. The event kicks off in the Town Hall with a number of speeches followed by a parade of beer carts. Towards the end of the weekend, there’s also the curious tradition of ‘knighting’ beer ambassadors. belgium.beertourism.com
Indy Man Beer Con, Manchester: Held in the glorious Victorian Baths, this festival stands for the Independent Manchester Beer Convention. Perhaps the most eccentric event on this list, each area of the festival takes place in a former swimming pool, and those seeking peace and quiet can nip into one of the converted changing booths. indymanbeercon.co.uk
Erlangen Bergkirchweih: Those who have been to Oktoberfest will be gratified to see the familiar sight of dirndls, lederhosen and Brezeln (soft pretzels) without the masses of tourists. Known locally as ‘Berg’, in May the town of Erlangen is flooded with 2 million visitors sniffing out the best lagers in the ‘Keller’ and ‘Biergärten’ across the city. der-berg-ruft.de
Great British Beer Festival, London: Marketed as ‘the World’s Biggest Pub’, this celebration of Brit brews takes place in early August, coinciding with the city-wide London Beer Festival. Despite the name, American and continental beers are as easy to find as their British counterparts. gbbf.org.uk
The Great Kiwi Beer Festival, Christchurch: This festival only lasts a day, but still manages to pack a punch on the international scene. The Great Kiwi Beer Festival takes places outdoors from start to finish, featuring 300 or so local, national, and international suds and ciders. greatkiwibeerfestival.co.nz
Brewmasters Craft Beer Festival, Galveston: For a weekend at the end of August, this Texan town puts on the Brewmasters Craft Beer Festival – one for the thinking man, with seminars held as part of the festival’s BrewHaHa feature. brewmastersbeerfest.com
Qingdao International Beer Festival: At Asia’s biggest beer festival, visitors can embark upon comprehensive beer tastings with fare from around the world, as well as take part in games and drinking contests. qingdaochinaguide.com
Beerfest Asia, Singapore: Showcasing a wide selection of craft from around the continent, all the leading names in Asia’s beer industry are present at this event, rendering it more comprehensive than Qingdao, if a little more corporate. beerfestasia.com
Paisley Beer Festival: Held in late April, there’s a large focus on Scottish breweries here, but you will be able to find beer from south of Hadrian’s Wall and continental Europe as well. Arrive in good time, as past years have seen the festival close early after punters had drunk all the taps dry. paisleybeerfestival.org.uk
