Valle de los Monjes (Valley of the Monks) in Chihuahua – Bordering the US in north-central Mexico, the state of Chihuahua boastssome of the most awe-inspiring yet relatively unknown landscapes in the entire country. Among them is the otherworldly Valley of the Monks, a basin in the Sierra Tarahumara mountains featuring distinctive rock formations, all millions of years old, that resemble great stone monks. This is a prime destination for sports enthusiasts who can hike, rappel and mountain bike among the monoliths. The easiest way to get here is to drive from the town of Creel or Bocoyna, or book a tour. [Photo: Carlos Adampol Galindo/Wikimedia Commons]

Samalayuca in Chihuahua – About an hour from the US border, you’ll find the Médanos de Samalayuca Protected Natural Area, part of the Chihuahuan Desert – the largest desert in North America. While most of this desert landscape is littered with shrubbery, this area is largely free of vegetation and features instead large dunes of fine golden fine sand dunes, some as tall as 300 metres. A stunning and imposing desert landscape. Due to the size of the dunes and the softness of the sand, the landscape is ideal for sandboarding, though less adventurous types can take ATV rides to drink in the vistas. Pegüis Canyon in Chihuahua – An imposing canyon with sheer limestone rock walls that soar up to 300 metres high, towering over the Conchos River that winds its way through the chasm. Whitewater rafting is possible during the rainy season (between May and October), for adrenaline junkies able to navigate a medium to difficult course, but in the drier times of the year, taking a more leisurely canoe trip down the river is an option. The arid desert landscape and astounding geological formations make this a unique landscape for a one-of-a-kind adventure.

Cuatro Ciénegas Biosphere Reserve in Coahuila – Directly to the east of Chihuahua lies the state of Coahuila, home to this natural paradise on the outskirts of the ‘Magical Town’ of Cuatro Ciénegas. An oasis in the middle of the desert is always an incredible sight, but this oasis is extra special thanks to its magnificent biodiversity, as well as its mineral-rich soil that lends the many pools their eye-popping blue and turquoise colours that rival those of any beach in paradise. If that’s not enough, in Poza Azul – the most famous of the pools – you can find stromatolites, a kind of microbial reef that scientists believe are the oldest life forms on earth, and which exist in only a few places across the world. Surrounded by a gypsum desert of white dunes, this oasis is truly a unique and unforgettable destination.

Paricutín Volcano in Michoacán – The history of this majestic volcano is as if straight out of a magical realism tale: The first record of it dates from 1943, when a farmer recounts seeing the first crack in the volcano. This makes it the youngest volcano on earth, and the only one ever seen at the moment of its birth, as it grows, erupts and rests. It’s also a reminder of nature’s violent powers: Paricutín destroyed two towns during its period of activity, leaving behind only the remnants of a church that once belonged to the now-extinct Parangaricutiro village. Fortunately, all the inhabitants of both villages were able to flee, and there were only material losses. This natural wonder is best viewed from the town of Angahuan.

It is divided into the Pinacate, where there is a volcanic shield of approximately 500 volcanoes, and the great Altar desert, the area closest to the coast, with an extension of 5,000 square kilometres of dunes. To get the most out of a visit – walking among the dunes, hiking the volcanic craters and camping under the stars – book an organised, guided tour.

Revillagigedo Islands in Colima – One for the divers: The Revillagigedo archipelago, located between 700 and 1000 kilometres from Manzanillo, is sometimes called the Galapagos of Mexico. A major draw here is the marine biodiversity, from whales to dolphins, sharks and manta rays, which makes it a real gem for diving enthusiasts – though travellers are not allowed to go ashore, so only liveaboard dives are possible. Organised tours depart from Baja California Sur and usually last for about a week. [Photo: Organised tours/Wikimedia Commons]

Tacaná Volcano in Chiapas – This immense volcano reaches 4,092 metres above sea level and right sits at the border with Guatemala. The top of it divides Mexico from its neighbouring country, which makes ascending to its peak something really special. During the climb you can glimpse different types of ecosystems, and depending on the height you reach, you’ll find high jungles, pine forests, cloud forests and Zacatonal grasslands. The ascent from the Mexican side is generally done across two days: the first day, you ascend to a camp where you’ll spend the night, and the next day you start a seven-hour walk. It is somewhat difficult, especially the last section, which requires a lot of physical effort. Leave well before dawn if you want to catch the sunrise at the top.
