Even Santa can’t compete with some of these celebrities, who went totally nuts with their gift selections in order to impress their loved ones – and perhaps cause a buzz. Don’t believe us? Check out the following list of incredible Christmas gifts.
A Vintage Pac-Man Arcade Game – Do boys love toys, and are diamonds really a girl’s best friend? Rapper Big Sean and actress-singer Naya Rivera seem to think so. In 2013, Big Sean gifted Rivera, his fiancé at the time, a stunning diamond necklace to match her large diamond engagement ring; Rivera returned the favour by presenting her number one man with a vintage Pac-Man arcade game.
An $84 Million Yacht – Two of India’s richest and most powerful brothers, Anil and Mukesh Ambani, are famous for competing with each other in every possible way – even when it comes to Christmas. In 2008, younger brother Anil gifted his wife a 34-metre luxury super yacht named Tian, which is estimated to cost an incredible $84 million. Along with (presumably) pleasing his wife, the gift served to one-up his brother Mukesh, who had recently given his own wife a corporate jet that set him back a “mere” $53 million.
A White Christmas …in LA – In her book sTORI Telling, actress and heiress Tori Spelling describes her father, successful film and TV producer Aaron Spelling, as a perfect daddy who would go out of his way to make his children happy. And when we say out of his way, we really mean it. Tori recalls how he managed to give the family a “White Christmas” at their mansion in sunny Los Angeles one year by bringing in artificial snow. Costing a cool $2 million, the children had a blast playing in the snow on Christmas Day – and building what might be the world’s most expensive snowman.
A Waterfall – In 2011, Angelina Jolie wanted to do something really special for then-husband Brad Pitt’s 47th birthday, and settled on buying him a waterfall in California, including its surrounding land. You know, as you do. Poor Brad, however, had to wait to get his present, as Angelina revealed the surprise a week later on Christmas Day. Can you imagine Brad’s disappointment, going a whole week thinking that his wife didn’t get him anything for his birthday? We think it was worth the wait.
Dog Sweaters – Picking gifts for friends can be “ruff”! In 2014, late-night talk show host Jimmy Fallon gifted media mogul Oprah Winfrey ugly Christmas sweaters …for her 5 dogs. Winfrey described them as “one of the best presents [she’s] ever gotten” and suggested that anyone still looking for the perfect gift for a friend or loved one should consider giving them a gift for their dog. “Anybody that gets you anything for your dog, you LOVE them,” she said. As always, great life advice from Oprah.
The “Queen” Of All Christmas Trees – At the end of World War II, British forces played a significant role in Norway’s liberation from Nazi occupation, and the Norwegian people have never forgotten it. Each year since 1947, Norway sends a huge Norwegian spruce Christmas tree to London as a sign of gratitude. The 20-metre-tall tree is known as “the Queen of the Forest” and is chosen with great care, usually many years before it’s sent to London as a holiday gift and placed in Trafalgar Square.
A $160K Porsche 911 – Roc Nation, the record label representing Rihanna, bought the famous singer-songwriter a Porsche 911 Turbo S as a Christmas present in 2012, to show her just how happy they were with her record-breaking sales. According to MTV News reports at the time, the sports car cost a whopping $160k. Rihanna thanked Roc Nation for the gift by tweeting: “Turbo on dat a$$. Thank you to my Roc brothers!”
A White Horse – Speaking of record companies and horsepower: Lady Gaga’s record label, Interscope, picked a fitting gift for their own superstar, who’s known for her love of horses. They got her a white horse as an early Christmas gift in 2015, prompting the excited singer to posted a picture of her new steed to Instagram with a thank-you message: “Today on my doorstep was delivered a White Angel from heaven. A heartfelt thank you to John Janick and Steve Berman, the whole Interscope family.”
A Cheese Wheel – Like the other celebs on this list, singer-songwriter John Legend is flush with cash, but he doesn’t feel the need to splash it about in order to show his love to wife Chrissy Teigen. Case in point: his big gift to her on Christmas 2015 was a cheese wheel. While some women might be disappointed that their gift doesn’t glitter, Teigen was ecstatic over her present and wrote on Instagram: “John got me my lifetime dream for Christmas! A cheese wheel to dump pasta and risotto in for years to come!”
An Exotic Indian Tiger – Floyd “Money” Mayweather is widely known for loving luxury and having an extravagant lifestyle. In line with his over-the-top persona, the professional boxer received an exotic tiger as an early Christmas gift from his promotional company, The Money Team, in 2015. Of course, keeping a wild animal as a pet is problematic, and Mayweather drew widespread criticism from fans and animal rights advocates – especially after he posted a picture with his pet tiger on a leash.
$12K Vintage Guitars – Before their split in 2012, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were one of the most popular power couples in Hollywood. And despite having millions of dollars between them, they seemed to care more about finding meaningful, personal gifts for each other; one such example was when Stewart got Pattinson a collection of vintage guitars for Christmas 2011, including a 1959 Fender Jazzmaster and a 1947 K&F Lap Steel. Clocking in at $12K, the gift was expensive but thoughtful.
A Shower Cap – The British royals are perhaps the most formal family on the planet, but if you think their holiday celebrations are all stuffy dinners and extravagant gifts, think again. Well, okay, there are stuffy black-tie dinners, but the gift-giving part of the evening (gifts are exchanged at tea time on Christmas Eve) is more relaxed, with the royals presenting one another gag gifts meant purely in jest. In 2013, Prince Harry reportedly gave the queen a shower cap printed with the words “Ain’t life a b****”, which made Her Majesty laugh.
