Is it just us, or does 2023 seem to be racing past in the blink of an eye? If you feel the same, it could be a sign that you’re, ahem, how can we put it… getting a little older?
The notion that the years go by more rapidly as we age is a long-held belief and a pillar of folk wisdom, alongside ideas such as “absence makes the heart grow fonder” or “the early bird gets the worm”. However, in the case of our understanding of time, it seems that Grandma’s advice may, indeed, have some substance to it. Increasing numbers of academics and scientists now theorise that our perception of time really does change as we get older.
Now, let’s be clear, we’re not trying to imply that you and all our other dear readers are over the hill. We’re simply suggesting that, well, the view might be getting more expansive. Putting science aside, we offer an alternative gauge of our relationship to the passing of time: a confounding quiz of 20 defining cultural moments from the nineties and noughties. Try it, and you might find that the results surprise you. While you may still be young at heart, perhaps you’ll discover that you’re older than you realise!
