Be Creative With Your Uniform: A current exhibition at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York explores Uniformity, including the history and function of work uniforms. Juxtaposing actual uniforms from different eras with contemporary fashion interpretations of those regulated styles, it proves that even the most rigid dress code can, once taken out of context, be given a twist and turned into something entirely different. Allow yourself to be inspired by that creativity when transforming your office uniform into an evening look. fitnyc.edu

Know Your Office Dress Code: Even in these days of rapidly eroding office dress codes, most workers are far from free to choose what they wear. It pays to be familiar with your employer’s clothing regulations – written or unwritten – and to be aware of how far you can bend them. If you know exactly what is acceptable, you can plan a versatile look for evening based on what’s allowed at the office. If in doubt, check with your boss or human resources. Get The Best Basics: The standard capsule work wardrobe can be tweaked to accommodate basics that do double duty as office fare and evening wear. Black suits are easier to enhance than other colours, and white shirts don’t necessarily read boardroom style. Business formal is without a doubt the hardest code to dress down, but if you pair a well-fitted black suit (or pantsuit for women) in a slim, modern cut with a plain white shirt, you’re almost working with a blank canvas in fashion terms.

Suits – Two Halves Of A Whole: When you’re ready to let your hair down for happy hour, undoing the top button on your shirt probably won’t cut it. You need to get out of your suit to truly go from business to casual, but that doesn’t mean you need a full change of clothes. Instead, treat a suit as separates: take off the jacket and you’re left with an inconspicuous pair of pants (replace the jacket with a cardigan or hoodie, if needed); switch the trousers for jeans or shorts, and you’re rocking a relaxed preppy look. Up Your Shoe Game: If you dress business formal or professional at the office, you’ll probably have to ditch the shoes when you leave your desk. In fact, if you’re anything like us, you’ll probably want to kick them off anyway! Men can dress down a suit with a pair of funky sneakers or add a pop of colour with decidedly un-formal shoes. Women can lose the sensible heels and either go comfy with fun flats, or sky-high with sexy stilettos. [Shoes: asos.com]

Colour Un-Coordinate: Those playing it safe with head-to-toe neutrals at the office can achieve a drastic change by simply replacing one item with a more colourful one. A pink cardigan instead of your blazer, a red polo shirt instead of the white button-down, or a blue mini skirt replacing black pants… and you’re good to go. [Blazer, skirt and polo: zalando.co.uk]

Accessorise To The Max: For ladies, accessories are key. Just one fabulous piece of statement jewellery can turn a no-nonsense office outfit into a fun party ensemble. If you can’t leave any clothes at the office, simply fling a colourful necklace, dangling earrings, a chunky bracelet (or all of the above) into your handbag. Put on your bling once you finish work, and you’re good to go – no change of clothes required. Men have limited options, but a bright tote or cool belt can jazz up an outfit with minimal effort. Buy Clothes That Multitask: Luckily, we’re not the only ones thinking about clothes that will take you from office to evening with minimal fuss. Clothing designers are increasingly aware of the need for apparel that does most of the heavy lifting, and are designing office wear with inbuilt multitasking abilities – like a scarf that turns into a slouchy cardigan (and a dress), a stretchy dress shirt made from NASA-engineered fabric or Betabrand’s cultishly adored dress pant yoga pants. ministryofsupply.com, betabrand.com, encircled.ca
