Situated on the west coast of Western Australia – separated from the country’s more populated regions by the expansive outback on one side, and from the rest of the world by the Indian Ocean on the other – Perth is one of the world’s most isolated cities. It’s well worth the trek, however, for its sunny climate, gorgeous beaches, international food scene, expressive art community and laid-back lifestyle – not to mention its ridiculously happy wildlife. Ready to explore Perth? Join street art-spotting duo Duncan and Nikki Atack for a whistle-stop tour of their beloved city. To view this entire list of must-sees on a map, click here.
8:30am, Enjoy An Insta-worthy Breakfast – Located in the trendy inner-city precinct of Northbridge, Flora & Fauna is one of Perth’s most popular cafés with arguably the prettiest breakfast in town. Their tiny kitchen delivers huge but healthy portions, with all-vegetarian main dishes, plus an array of vegan baked goods to choose from. Their famous apple crumble is a must-try, and their chocolate chunk cookies are to die for, especially with a hot coffee on the side. [Photo by Streets of Perth]

11:30am, Sample Sweet Greek Delights at Lukumades – Remaining in Subiaco for the moment, lukumades – or Greek doughnuts – are arguably the most tempting treats on the streets of Perth right now. Made fresh to order and eaten straight from the fryer, this slick hole-in-the-wall has really nailed the comfort food angle. Topping choices include Nutella, Oreo, jaffa, strawberry jam or matcha and white chocolate, to name just a few, with the option to add gelato and a coffee on the side. If you prefer the more traditional style though, try them drizzled with honey and topped with cinnamon and crushed nuts, like you’d find in a classic Greek bakery. [Photo by Streets of Perth]

Before You Go: Make Sure You’re Equipped With A Hat And Plenty Of Sunscreen – Perth’s glorious weather means that in mid-summer (January/February), temperatures can soar to over 40 degrees Celsius! And while it’s a dry heat – similar to the climate in the Mediterranean – the high UV levels in Australia elevate the risk of skin cancer. Check out the SunSmart website for more tips on sun protection.

Before You Go: Brush Up On Your West Aussie Lingo Before You Land – While English is the national language of Australia, the Aussies have a tendency to colloquialise certain words and phrases. For example, arvo is the afternoon, and true blue means genuine while fair dinkum means true. In Perth’s pubs you can skull (down)pints and middys (half pints), and perhaps smoke a durry (cigarette), too. Also, when West Australians – or Sandgropers as they’re known locally – head to the beach, be prepared to get an eyeful of men inbudgie smugglers (Speedos) and women in bathers(bathing suits) and double-pluggers/thongs (no, not g-strings – in Perth, flip-flops are known as thongs!). Click here for more examples.

Before You Go: Be Prepared To Pay For Great Coffee (But It’s Worth It!) – Australia is world-renowned for its coffee culture, most famously giving rise to the global popularity of the Flat White, the Long Black and the ‘Long Macc Topped Up’ (essentially a double-shot latte). In Perth, you can expect to pay between three and five dollars when buying a coffee out and about; but as the locals will tell you, it’s high-quality. Bonus tip: Streets of Perth’s favourite coffee can be found at Black Cherries Espresso, located in the food hall at Fremantle Markets.
