She may be the queen of catching the best looks on the streets of the world’s fashion capitals, but Rei Shito always returns to her hometown for style inspiration. In her opinion, there’s nothing like Tokyo fashion: “Tokyo girls know how to wear trends well,” she says. “Some will adopt a trend for their whole look, while others mix current trends with their own personal style, and customise it in their own way.”
To prove it, Rei shares some of the most daring outfits she snapped while out and about at the recent Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo.
Fit For A Star
“The ‘90s look is alive and well – now on-trend in Tokyo, with midriff tops and wide, sporty pants. This girl’s outfit is typical of the ‘90s teenager pop idol group style!”
Tokyo à la 1999
“This is Ayana Miyamoto, a Japanese model. She’s also rocking a ‘90s look in her midriff top, bell bottoms and choker necklace. These items are so characteristic of the ’90s girly look in Tokyo. Her oversized down coat is a trendy item this season, too.”
The Brave And The Bold
“This is Momo-Chan, a college student at Bunka University. I’m really impressed with how she’s combined colours here, mixing silver metallics with vivid red and green. I never would have thought to mix these colours, because sometimes it’s just too much, but she makes it work! Her ‘bum bag’ is now a trend item seen all around the world – I saw many of these at Paris Fashion Week, too.”
Four-Eyed Fashionistas
“This is Maiko Shibuyaka (left), a buyer for select Tokyo shop The Four-Eyed, and Ura-can (right), a member of the shop staff and also a model (she walked for the Vetements show last season). I captured them in front of LaForet Harajuku. I’m interested in Ura-can’s hairstyle, especially her unique bangs. Her fashion sense in general is so unique and a little bit strange, and this outfit is typical of her style (all black, fur big coat and tight leather pants). Her personal style is similar to that of the Vetements brand: subversive street fashion.”
Hemp My Style
“This is Japanese model Yako-chan wearing a head-to-doe hemp suit – with nothing underneath! It’s got a very relaxed feeling, but also sexy. Her cap is a Muse x Calorie Mate collaboration, which adds another dimension to the look. Her sense of style is ‘street’ and at the same time sexy and laid-back.”
