From an updated take on a vintage classic to the breakout colour of the year, plus a supermodel-inspired look, the latest boot trends tick all the boxes of wearability, versatility and style. We scoured the biggest runways and fashion collections of the season to bring you the top cold-weather footwear looks for autumn and winter – along with guidance on rocking them like a fashion pro.

THE STYLE: Equestrian

The cornerstone of any autumn wardrobe is a cool yet practical boot, and this year’s most noticeable trend does not disappoint. After seeing preppy dressing, retro-inspired trends and supermodel-slash-horse-girls everywhere, it only makes sense that riding boots would become the it footwear of the season. Major players like Miu Miu, Hermès, Celine and Loro Piana rode straight into their equestrian era showcasing stunning stable-inspired designs on their A/W 2024 runways, with versions in rich leathers and polished finishes for an ultra-sophisticated take on the style.

Try The Trend: For a chic office look, wear riding boots with a pair of tailored trousers and a blazer. Tone the look down with a pair of straight-leg jeans and a knit top, or go big and channel your inner Brontë with a flowy dress and oversized jumper. One way or the other, make sure your riding boots stop just below the knee and come in a refined colour, such as a classic black, a smooth chestnut or a colour-block with burgundy for that authentic equestrian spirit that feels both timeless and modern.

THE HEIGHT: Over-The-Knee

If one boot reigned supreme on A/W 24 runways, it’s the over-the-knee. A trend first popularised in the 1960s, it’s having another major comeback, bringing new-and-improved flair and reaching even higher heights. We’re not saying you should completely skip ankle booties this season, but if we follow the lead of many major brands, including Fendi, Ferragamo, Stella McCartney and Chloé (with their worldwide-trending pair), maybe you’ll want to aim higher this year. And by the looks of the top collections, the varieties – from suede, denim and patent leather to flat, kitten-heel and sky-high stilettos – are endless.

Try The Trend: Feeling daring? Consider your thigh-high boots as an alternative to trousers. Wear them with a belted oversized blazer for a polished formal look, a long hoodie for cool street-style vibes, or show them off under a slit midi skirt or slip dress for a more feminine result. Go for two trends in one with this pair of buckled riding boots, try something more low-key and timeless with this sleek waterproof pair, or go big with these stunning leather beauties. You’ll be making a statement, whatever you choose.

THE COLOUR: Burgundy

From handbags to coats and nail polish, this deep wine colour is an autumn classic year after year, but in case you hadn’t noticed, it’s having an especially huge moment. Gucci, Sézane and Saint Laurent all had good reasons to include this shade in their A/W collections: while burgundy is similarly in mood to black or dark brown, it adds a subtle splash of colour that autumn wardrobes often lack, yet is still versatile and expensive-looking enough to mix and match with almost anything.

Try The Trend: Burgundy goes well with everything from neutrals to pastels and jewel tones, so it’s particularly easy to wear. However, if you’re sticking to a straightforward but luxurious-looking vibe, pair the boots with thick wool trousers or dark denim, and a similarly toned cashmere jumper. For other options, this kitten-heeled pair would go perfect with some wide-leg jeans for a more casual feel, while these moto boots could make for a chic counterbalance when worn with a flowy feminine midi dress, and this knee-high look would be the main focus of an ensemble paired with a mini skirt and oversized jumper.

THE MATERIAL: Suede

So long, leather – this year, the fabric spotlight goes to buttery soft materials. The boho trend that was once ‘out’ experienced a renaissance on this year’s A/W 24 runways, including Isabel Marant, Chanel and Chloé. And yes, they’re higher-maintenance than other materials, but there’s no scuff or mark that a brush and a suede shampoo can’t fix. That said, we suggest wearing them now, before the rain, sleet and snow of winter make it less advisable.

Try The Trend: While suede is making an appearance in every possible colour and shade, we recommend sticking to more seasonal, versatile warm hues, like brown, camel and tan, to make outfit planning a tad easier. And speaking of ensembles, fashionistas agree that suede boots and a denim skirt is the ultimate autumn combo. Whether it’s a classic tall boot (available in brown and black), a more modern draped version, or a cool-girl cowboy-inspired design, suede boots are not to be hidden under trousers, but rather proudly worn as the cherry (or autumn apple) on top.

THE SHAPE: Square Toe

Tapered toes are out, and squared toes are squarely in. This season, we’re seeing more room in the toe box, possibly riding the continued resurgence of ‘90s fashion flair – and we appreciate it. Whatever the reason, catwalks from Eckhaus Latta, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Loewe, to name a few, were walked with a more structured and edgier squared-toe dimensions in different versions from high- and low-heeled to ankle, mid-calf, and knee-high boots.

Try The Trend: Whether it’s sharply angled or slightly squared, the trend already gives a strong, rough statement to the look, so opt for the right complements to counterbalance. Try delicate slip dresses and flared or wide-leg jeans to soften the effect, and cotton culottes or cropped trousers to highlight the boot. Regarding colour, stick to neutrals – black, brown, ivory or tan – for more versatility, or opt for a cool printed design for an even more impact.
