Why compete with huge crowds in the great outdoors? Have the trails and waterways practically to yourself in these off-the-beaten-track destinations for summer adventures.
Whitewater Rafting in Idaho – As the water recedes on the Spokane River, rocks reveal themselves and create some of America’s best rapids in a state that has an estimated 5,600 kilometres of whitewater (the most in the continental US). It’s recommended to book a trip through a local operator like ROW Adventures, as they’ll steer you towards the best waterways at any given time and keep you safe.
Four-Wheeling in Alaska – Bypass some of the more obvious adventuring locations in Alaska and drive about an hour north of Anchorage to the small town of Eklutna. From 1 April to 30 November, it’s a favourite of ATV enthusiasts, as some of its wider trails are opened for light motoring. It’s an exciting way to get close the namesake glacier – just be prepared to hike in the last 2 kilometres. [Photo: Savanah Evans]
Canoeing and Kayaking in New York – Once considered the “Highways of the Adirondacks”, the waterways of the Tupper Lake, NY area are prime for easy water activities. Paddlers revel in the undisturbed beauty of the surrounding wilderness, while taking in some great fishing, too. Opt for a 2-4 day trip, and really get to know one of the hidden gems of the Northeast US. [Photo: el Neato/Flickr]
Sport Fishing in Florida – Reelers will delight in the variety and bounty available in the waters off South Walton in Florida’s panhandle. Chartered boats depart daily and boast cobia, wahoo, king mackerel, Jack crevasse and trigger fish among other fresh catches. Start at Grayton Beach State Park to fish on Western Lake, but don’t leave without trying your hand at surf fishing – one of the most popular ways to get your own catch of the day. Cycling and Hiking in Croatia – The only thing better than an adventure is one with great rewards at the end. Plan a cycling wine tour and culinary journey through the Istria region and enjoy gorgeous vineyards, plus some of Croatia’s best dining. You’ll have to work for it, though, as some of the routes have steep ascents and wind through small village alleys and unkempt trails.
Rock Climbing & Hiking in Norway – Unforgiving Norwegian winters give way to some epic summers, and that’s nowhere more apparent than in Nordfjord, where you can ascend the Mt Hoven via ferrata (ie. climbing clipped into a steel cable affixed to the mountain). The reward is immense: you get to cross the Gjølmunnebrua suspension bridge, the longest via ferrata bridge in Europe, and enjoy its incredible views. Take solace in the descent, as a new skylift serving the top of the mountain just opened in May.
Cycling in Switzerland – No less than 10 major routes work their way through the Jura-Three Lakes region of Switzerland, bordering France. Glide through lush meadows outside Lausanne, or take the foothills to Geneva, passing through villages and hugging the shore of Lac de Neuchâtel. [Photo: kaveman743/Flickr]
Canyoning in Montenegro – Nevidio Canyon is 2,700 metres of intensive ravines and climbs with passages as narrow as 0.5 metres! It used to be an area only accessible by professional divers and alpinists, but changes in the 1960s made it easier for tourists and locals to enjoy its unparalleled beauty. Be sure to bring a wetsuit, as the waters are typically cold almost year-round.
Rafting and Biking in Slovenia – Slovenia may only have one national park, but it’s a one-stop shop for adventure. Beyond great rafting and cycling, visitors come for top-notch viewpoints and hiking trails. Mt. Triglav is the main destination, rising more than 2,000 metres over the park. Afterwards, you can rest your tired legs with a dip in Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest glacial lake. [Photo: Paul Appleton/Flickr]
Sailing in Quebec – Get away from it all just a few hours north of Montreal in Quebec’s Saguenay-Lac-Saint Jean region. The Saguenay Fjord is 88 kilometres of easy waters to earn your chops as a true mariner. Sign up for a class to learn from a seasoned captain, or sit back and enjoy an intimate excursion gazing at the incredible cliffs and bays at every turn. Hiking in Alberta – Alberta’s most rugged national park borders Glacier National Park, just above Montana, but is definitely the less travelled of the two. Waterton Lakes boasts miles of pristine hiking trails that lead to unbelievable views of the adjoining mountain ranges and are absolutely stunning for fall foliage. Intermediate elevation gains mean there’s a route suitable for everyone, too. [Photo: davebloggs007/Flickr]
Jungle Trekking in Belize – El Cayo, Belize is a newcomer on the adventure scene, especially considering its proximity to the popular Tikal ruins across the border in Guatemala. Take advantage of everything from ziplining to horseback riding, then retreat to a luxury stay at the end of a long day. It’s the perfect blend of adventure and comfort. [Photo: Philip Larson/Flickr]
Rock Climbing in Israel – The southern end of Israel is dry, arid and home to the Ramon crater – the site of hundreds of thousands of years of natural deterioration. It’s easiest (and safest) to hire a local tour company to lead your rappelling mission to the top of Chatzatzon, which can begin as early as 3am (to arrive at the top by dawn). Most of these ascents are suitable for any skill level. [Photo: Israel Extreme]
