The Last of Us – As hardened gamers will already know, this is the show to get excited about in 2023! Based on the PlayStation console series, Pedro Pascal takes on the role of Joel, a bereaved father living in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. He meets Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a young woman who has experienced just as many hardships, and agrees to help her trek across the harsh landscape. Having won a boat load of awards in its game incarnation, this story comes with high expectations. The great casting is matched behind the camera, with the producers of hit show Chernobyl running the show. The stakes are high, but this will certainly be the one everyone’s talking about.

The Mandalorian – Season 3 – Pascal again takes the lead, but his face will be under the familiar helmet of The Mandalorian as the Star Wars show returns for its third season. The characters’ appearance in sister show The Book of Boba Fett confirmed that he and Grogu (Baby Yoda) are reunited, and one can only imagine the excitement of seeing them back in the stars. Back To The Future legend Christopher Lloyd will also join this season in an undisclosed role. Expect more hijinks, and a lot of cooing over ‘Mando’s’ adorable companion!

3 Body Problem– Three years on from Game of Thrones, its creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are back with a new show that promises to bend audiences’ minds! Based on the book by Liu Cixin, it follows the first human contact with alien life that sparks a multi-generational conflict. The producers called it “the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe”. With a massive budget and high hopes, this may be the surprise TV blockbuster of the year.

Loki – Season 2– Marvel fans will be ecstatic to see the return of The God of Mischief, whose TV debut was an integral part of the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Going from villain to romantic hero in his time in the role, Tom Hiddleston returns as Loki is faced with heartbreak after Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), an alternate version of himself who he is in love with, has shattered The Multiverse. This is likely to have huge ramifications for the MCU moving forward, so everyone who wants to see what’s next for The Avengers is going to want to tune in.

Fallout – Another video game adaptation, and another apocalypse! For years, Fallout has been one of the key names in gaming for its pioneering titles. A film version was in production for a while, but now the makers of Westworld will be bringing it to TV. Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight) and Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) will star in a story that imagines the world devastated by nuclear war, with the remnants of an alternative, retro-futuristic past being picked over by survivors. Bringing the grim but witty world of the game to television will be no mean feat, but it will be fun to see this world brought to live action.

The Crown – Final Season– It’s been controversial, but never dull! The Crown comes to an end this year as the sixth and final season looks at Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) during her reign in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Following its tradition of rotating casts in two season cycles, the ensemble that appeared in season five will return, including Dominic West as Prince (now King) Charles, and Jonathan Pryce as the late Prince Phillip. It’s likely to cover some heart-wrenching moments in British and world history, not least the death of Princess Diana (played here by Elizabeth Debicki). However, after seven years and sixty episodes, it seems a poignant time to wave farewell to the lavish historical drama.

Masters Of The Air– Few TV shows have captured the drama of warfare quite like Band of Brothers and its sister show, The Pacific. Both series were produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who reunite to make a third mini-series based around conflict, this time in the sky. Masters of The Air follows the missions of the Eight Air Force of the US Army during World War II, and stars a mouth-watering cast that includes Austin Butler (Elvis), Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts), and Barry Keoghan (Eternals). With so much talent involved, expect something every bit as pulsating and dramatic as its predecessors.

Riverdale – Final Season – In 2017, a TV show debuted that drew some scorn from commentators. Netflix was making a darker, sexier version of the wholesome Archie comic books, popular in America during the mid-20th Century. Well, it’s the network that’s laughing now, as over the past five years that update has proven a solid hit for younger audiences, spawning two spin-offs (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Katy Keene) while also being immensely popular worldwide. Now, 2023 sees the final season’s debut, where the gang will seek to resolve the previous season’s epic finale involving a comet and time travel! With old cast members expected to return, everything will be thrown at the screen to give Archie and Co a fitting farewell.

Secret Invasion – Marvel fans will already know the title Secret Invasion, and be very excited for this TV spin-off based on the popular comic story line. If you’re familiar with the MCU movies, you’ll have seen the shapeshifting aliens Skrulls in Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Here, Samuel L Jackson returns as Nick Fury to deal with (you guessed it) an invasion of Skrulls, who have infiltrated every facet of society. It will also be thrilling to see the return of Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull we’re familiar with from previous movies. Kingsley Ben-Adir (The OA) joins Marvel regulars Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle, and Martin Freeman in an adventure fans will relish.

Squid Game – Season 2 – Out of nowhere, a South Korean TV drama gripped the world. Squid Game became the must-see show of 2021, following a deadly reality show based around children’s games. It proved to be a ground-breaking Emmy winner, becoming the first non-English language show to take home Best Actor (Drama) at the awards, as well as being nominated for Best Drama. The second season will be highly anticipated, and also runs alongside a Squid Game reality game show. Although, thankfully, these contestants don’t risk their lives!

The Idol – The Weeknd has dominated the pop charts with his own unique takes on love, fame, and modern life. He looks to take that perspective to television where he has created, produced, and starred in The Idol. It tells the story of a pop star (Lily-Rose Depp) who is looking to reinvent herself after a breakdown, and turns to a self-help guru/modern day cult leader, played by The Weeknd. Just as his music has always had a dark, twisted edge, fans are hoping his first foray into TV drama will have the same effect.

The Snow Girl– This Spanish mystery series invites you on the search for a girl that goes missing during a parade in Malaga. Few genres of television are as enduring as crime investigation, where some of the best loved characters in TV history have been introduced. The Snow Girl promises to add to that legacy with a female led cast and a gloomy tone, inspired by the source material of Javier Castillo’s best-selling novel. What’s the mystery behind the disappearance? Find out for yourself, and see if you can put the clues together before the big reveal!

True Detective: Night Country– Even if you take out the legacy of the True Detective series, Night Country should get you excited for the arrival of Jodie Foster on your screens. Other than brief cameos or voice roles, the two-time Oscar winner has not been part of a TV series since the 1970s, making her starring role in the HBO crime anthology something special. Having relaunched the careers of Matthew McConaughey [see trailer above] and Colin Farrell, could Foster’s role as an Alaskan detective investigating a mysterious murder spark a renaissance of her own?

Copenhagen Cowboy – Nicholas Winding Refn is the Danish director best known in America for movies like Drive and Only God Forgives. He returns to his native land for a new TV show, which stars Angela Bundalovic as a young woman seeking revenge in Copenhagen’s criminal underbelly. Refn hasn’t told stories in Danish since his 2005 film Pusher 3, and it will be interesting to see what he brings back home following his time in Hollywood. With his previous show, Too Old To Die Young, proving divisive among viewers, it will be intriguing to see how this pans out.

Alice In Borderland – Season 2 – This is technically not a 2023 series, as it premiered on 22 December last year, however, it’s likely that most people will be catching this in January, and if you aren’t then you definitely should! Alice in Borderland is a Korean show based on the Manga about two people stuck inside an abandoned Tokyo forced to compete in dangerous games determined by playing card. Before you say it – yes, it does sound a lot like Squid Game, and no doubt there is some overlap between this show’s success and the Korean juggernaut. However, the drama and complexity of the first season has seen it compared favourably to stories like Ready Player One and Battle Royale, meaning this show has things to say and promises an even more explosive second season.

Featuring a cast that includes Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) and Benny Safdie (The Mandalorian), it’s expected to be a tense and unnerving supernatural fable that has echoes of shows like Black Mirror.

Win Or Lose – Pixar has dominated the cinema screen for over 25 years, and entered the world of streaming with well-received shorts and spin-off series.
