Scientific studies show that video gaming can certainly make us happy, raising dopamine levels in the brain to about the same degree as eating a slice of pizza or scoop of ice cream. Not to worry: though video game addiction is a real thing, various studies also show that it only affects a very small percentage of gamers, and the overall impact of gaming for most players may actually be positive, improving skills like problem-solving, spatial memory and attention. Don’t feel bad, then, if you have trouble putting down your controller when playing some of the following video games.
Tetris – Created inside a Soviet computer laboratory in Moscow, Tetris was so addictive that its own creator, Alexey Pajitnov, kept playing it instead of eventually completing it back in 1984. If that’s not enough to convince you of the game’s addictive prowess, keep in mind that scientists borrowed the game’s name to describe a syndrome known as Tetris Effect, which occurs when people spend so much time and attention to an activity that it begins to haunt their thoughts and dreams. Fortnite – 2018’s Best Multiplayer/Competitive Game, according to the prestigious Webby Awards, was also a main inspiration for this list. Why? For all the accolades, incredible sales, praise and awards it has received, Fortnite has been heavily criticised for having side effects similar to the symptoms of gaming addiction. The World Health Organization has recently classified addiction to Fortnite (and other video games) as a mental health problem, though experts disagree on the extent of the issue. Fallout 3 – Some gamers are quick to point out that Fallout 3 is far from the perfect game – that the developers could have done better with the combat and action – but then again, that’s true for pretty much every game out there. In any case, Fallout 3 has sold millions of copies worldwide since its release in 2008, and is considered one of the most iconic games ever for both PS3 and Xbox 360. Why? Simply because it motivates players with plenty of reasons to discover its wondrous and endless world, even after 300 hours of playing. [Image via mobygames.com]
