Athens
Athens, Greece – Rediscover this millennia-old destination via its newest architectural treasure: the Renzo Piano-designed Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). Following the 11-year development of a piece of abandoned seafront land in suburban Athens, it’s one of the world’s most sustainable building complexes of its size, and includes a 17-hectare park – a much-needed retreat in a city with the lowest per-capita green spaces in Europe. Dedicated to promoting the arts, sports and education, the Center offers many exhibitions and events throughout the year, including the free SNFestival in summertime. Beirut, Lebanon – Middle Eastern Food is becoming mainstream in the West, as its health benefits (and general tastiness) are heralded everywhere from Milwaukee to Munich. In particular, Beirut – known for its lively fashion, clubs, nightlife and entertainment – is rising in popularity as a foodie mecca. Widening our palates in 2019, we’ll be heading to the Beirut Food Festival in September to try traditional tabbouleh, mezze, pomegranate molasses and kibbeh nayeh, the Lebanese speciality of spiced, finely ground meat. Well worth the trip! Lucy Revill[Photo: alixanaeuphoria/Flickr]

Bhutan – Now you have even more reason to visit a bona fide carbon negative country whose government values its Gross National Happiness quotient over its Gross National Product. A recent cross-kingdom highway expansion is now opening up previously hard-to-reach areas of the country, such as Bumthang in the wilder, rugged east, where mystical views of holy peaks alternate with bird-filled forests. Catskills, New York, USA – The 50th anniversary of the infamous Woodstock festival is the perfect excuse to finally make that trip to Upstate New York you keep planning. In addition to the Bethel Woods Music and Culture Festival celebrating the golden anniversary, there will be commemorative events throughout the year. The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts was founded on the grounds of the farm where the historic concert took place, and is well worth a visit – regardless of events – for a bit of hippie history. Of course, for panoramas like this, you’ll need to put in the work: you have to climb to the top of the large dunes that border the shore. Still a relatively unknown destination, the Taroa Dunes are gaining increasing attention from locals and foreigners alike, so get there soon – ideally with a local guide. Germany
Germany – 2019 is the year and Germany is the place to celebrate good (some would argue the very best) design. 100 years ago in Weimar, the Bauhaus was founded. It was the first of three art schools that shaped the design and architecture of the period. More importantly, it lent its name to a movement that still influences what we consider modern design. The school, the movement and the real-world manifestations of the Bauhaus vision are being celebrated all over Germany all year long. Fiona Brutscher

Festivities kick off on 26 February, the official centennial date, and run throughout the year in the form of concerts, performances, historical presentations and a Summerfest in June. Jessica Keller

April sees cherry blossom festivals all over the country, while in May, Tokyo’s Kanda matsuri transforms the city into a giant parade. July hosts both Osaka’s Tenjin and Kyoto’s Gion festivals.
