Japan is set to be a hot destination – in more ways than one – during the coming summer. You can’t beat the heat, but at least escape the crowds by heading to historic Kyoto instead of overcrowded Tokyo. The country’s first Ace Hotel will be the place to stay once it opens on 16 April 2020. Located on a heritage site, it will be within easy walking distance of many of the city’s famous landmarks. However, staying true to the hotel group’s brand DNA, the storied building will be infused with a contemporary aesthetic and is sure to bring a new hip factor to the neighbourhood.
In certain circles, the opening of a W hotel is akin to a seal of approval, confirming the city’s status as a seriously cool destination. Melbourne is set to be elevated to that level mid-year, when the W Melbourne opens its doors on Collins Street in the CBD. If the chain’s first Australian property in Brisbane – and indeed its collection across the globe – is anything to go by, expect a riot of colours and a lively lobby filled with music and people dressed to the nines, hoping to see and be seen.

Beirut
In the midst of a troubled region, Beirut continues to celebrate its reputation as the Paris of the Middle East. The Lebanese capital offers art, design, history and seaside glamour; the new Arthaus Beirut is particularly intent on tapping into the creativity of the city and its art scene. For this purpose, a set of residential buildings owned by a local family of art collectors has been lovingly restored, preserving a small part of the city’s heritage in the process. Canandaigua
Canandaigua, one of New York’s picturesque Finger Lakes, takes its name from an indigenous word meaning “the chosen spot”. It is set to become an even more desirable location this summer, when The Lake House on Canandaigua opens. The hotel is being built by the co-founders of Brooklyn Home Company, who don’t just come armed with ample experience in NYC real estate development, but also local knowledge, as the family hails from the region. In addition to being conveniently located on a lakefront property, the hotel will be conveniently accessible with a seaplane shuttle from the Hudson River. [Rendering: Studio Tack]

Arctic Bath
If you’ve ever liked an Instagram image of a stunning contemporary treehouse, floating above a snow-covered forest floor, chances are it was a picture of the Treehotel. The founders and architects behind the project can be credited with making treehouses ‘happen’ and with putting Harads, Sweden, on the map. Now, they are planning to do more of the same with Arctic Bath, a floating hotel and spa on the river just minutes upstream. If the price tag for the new luxury digs is a little too steep, you could check in at the more moderately priced Treehotel and treat yourself to a spa or restaurant visit at the new sister property.

Faroe
The Faroe Islands are primarily known for their remoteness. The archipelago’s location in the Northern Atlantic, several hundred kilometres from the nearest coasts of Scotland, Norway and Iceland, make it a distinctive destination for outdoor enthusiasts, wildlife lovers and adventurers. While the opening of the first international hotel to operate in the Faroe Islands won’t make it any easier to reach, it may add a cosmopolitan flair. The Hilton Garden Inn Torshavn’s sustainability promise and green-roofed design should help ensure that it also blends in with the scenery and fits with the destination’s image.

Meanwhile, on Denmark’s mainland, a heritage building in the heart of the capital will remind us why ‘Scandi cool’ is so, well, cool. Villa Copenhagen will occupy the former Central Post and Telegraph Head Office, an imposing building dating to 1912 that’s been updated with restrained, simple yet luxurious interiors. Can Ferrereta
Some parts of Mallorca are still finding it hard to shake the party-hard, package-tourist, sangria-by-the-bucket image, others are firmly in the hands of Northern European retirees, but Santanyi is well on its way to becoming a third option. The quaint medieval town boasts an eclectic mix of art galleries, boutiques, excellent restaurants and even a year-round coworking space. Now the town is getting its second boutique hotel, Can Ferrereta. With its minimalist chic, hidden behind ancient walls at the heart of the old town, the “curated townhouse” promises to become the perfect address for discerning travellers. (Opening spring 2020)

Hoxton
Hipper-than-hip Hoxton Hotels are bringing their “open-house” concept to Rome, a city that should embrace the friendly, hospitable vibe the group offers. After all, what’s a lively lobby with a busy all-night bar and restaurant, other than an indoor piazza? Located in Salario, a residential area north of the city centre, the hotel will embrace its surroundings with a cultural events programme, locally sourced art, furniture and gift shop items, as well as “Hox friends” neighbourhood guides.

The Sense
In Tuscany’s seaside Maremma region, The Sense is preparing to give resort holidays a 21st-century overhaul. From the laid-back, warm yet breezy aesthetic, to the nature-focused setting and a contemporary dining concept, this is not your Nonna’s beach resort. Instead, a wide range of “experiences” takes the emphasis off lazy lounging, offering everything from yoga to surfing, wine tasting to cultural exploring, cycling to diving. Of course, the private beach and pool are still there when you just want to have an old-fashioned resort day.

Konzept
Award-winning Koncept Hotels are preparing to two more properties in Cologne, where the small chain’s success story started three years ago. Germany’s “most digital hotel” operates without on-site staff, but what truly sets it apart from competitors that have discovered digitalisation as a cost-saving measure are the fair working conditions (made possible by flexible remote work) and the sustainability angle (by eliminating non-essentials, but also by using renewable energies and planting one tree for every booking).

Werksviertel
From potato processing plant to nightlife district, Munich’s Werksviertel looks back on a somewhat chequered history, not always designed to attract tourists. Its current incarnation as urban business park is set to change that. With the city’s largest ferris wheel already offering a great view of the city, and a world-class concert hall under construction, the new Gambino Hotel Werksviertel (from April 2020) is likely to see more than just business travellers checking in.

Expect all the typical Ruby touches, like express check-in, 24/7 bar, rental guitars and Insta-worthy Marshall Amp sound systems that more than make up for the small room size.

You know where most people don’t head for a good night’s sleep? Central London – or the centre of any major city, for that matter. However, a new hotel brand is hoping to offer just that with a hotel focused on catching ZZZZs. Promising to be “your key to calm in the heart of London’s busy Piccadilly”, Zedwell Hotels (plural, so presumably this is to be the first of many) will offer soundproofed rooms, filtered air, mood lighting and sleep-inducing extras like a chillout lounge and yoga studio.

NoMad
Good thing the NoMad name, which the group took from its first hotel’s location North of Madison Square Park in New York, also works perfectly well – maybe even better – in a global context. After Los Angeles and Las Vegas, it’s crossing the Atlantic and opening NoMad London in summer. In keeping with its sister properties across the pond, the Covent Garden hotel will be housed in a historic building: the former Bow Street Magistrates’ Court and Police Station. Its crime-fighting history will be kept alive in the function room that doubles as a museum about the Metropolitan Police Force. [Photo: Roman and Williams]

Artist Residence
Artist Residence already took the big step from two properties in Brighton and Penzance to a third in London six years ago. Now the fifth property is opening in booming Bristol. The former maritime and industrial hub is being hailed as the UK’s creative hotspot, so it seems fitting that the new hotel will take over a former boot factory – and no doubt transform it in typically eclectic style, with the help of local artists.

If you’d prefer to skip the city altogether, rural England also has some new attractions to offer, like the latest country retreat by a reliably quirky boutique chain, opening in Cornwall. Like its sister sites, The Pig at Harlyn Bay is set on a sprawling, secluded property, in a historic house with idyllic views. Since The Pig brands itself as “restaurants with rooms” it will, of course, feature locally sourced, freshly prepared cuisine. What sets this new location apart is its proximity to the beach, making it particularly attractive for surfers. (Opening slated for June 2020)
