Dying Light 2: Stay Human – It’s been almost eight years since Kyle Crane first swung around the city of Harran, jumping over roofs and slaughtering zombies with all manner of melee weaponry. A popular (if unoriginal) mix of exploration, storytelling and exciting multiplayer, these themes have made Dying Light a perennial hit. Techland will finally release its follow-up on 4 February, and it will include all the elements that made the original such a smash – most notably the fantastic day/night mechanic that never fails to add a hair-raising frisson to the gameplay.

Elden Ring – Battling Dying Light 2 at the top of the Steam most-wanted chart is this original game by FromSoftware. What makes Elden Ring such a rousing prospect is its blending of elements from these games, as well as the stealth mechanics of From’s other recent hit, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. With its script and world-building background developed in collaboration with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring is shaping up to be the open world action RPG of the year upon its release on 25 February.

Starfield – When it comes to pithy game pitches, nothing quite hits the mark for RPG fans as ‘Skyrim in space’. That’s how Starfield’s director, Todd Howard, described this game last year, Bethesda’s first original game in 25 years, set for release on 11 November. Promising a huge universe to explore, multiple factions and hundreds of hours of conversation strands, Starfield is ready to become the sci-fi RPG that finally dislodges Mass Effect as the leader of cosmos-spanning epic gaming.

Splatoon 3 – The Splatoon game series has been bringing paint-splattered joy to Nintendo fans since the first instalment daubed its gaudy colours all over the Wii U back in 2015. As in the previous games, Splatoon 3 pitches the player into the realm of Inklings and Octolings, locked in a splotchy battle over the city of Splatsville. With a new region to explore and inhabitants to meet, plus fresh weapons, stages and moves, Splatoon 3 will retain the manic decoration-based gameplay while adding paint pots – more fun for fans of the series.

Bayonetta 3 – Created by Devil May Cry’s Hideki Kamiya, the Bayonetta series has forged a fervent following since the first game’s appearance in 2009. While Nintendo and Platinum Games are being as cagey as ever regarding its release date, gameplay clips and leaked information have already generated much excitement for this third instalment of the powerful witch’s adventures. New gameplay elements such as the ability to control demons against Bayonetta’s enemies look set to take the series to another level.

Tunic – In development for several years, it finally seems likely that Tunic fans will get a chance to sample its isometric delights, starting 16 March. Taking on the role of a diminutive fox stranded on a mysterious island full of danger and intrigue, there will be plenty to explore and discover in this mythical game. Presented in a fantastically clean and beautiful style, Tunic is a must for action-adventure fans, especially those brought up on isometric classics such as Knight Lore and Head Over Heels.

Stray – Few things surprised gaming fans as much as the breakout success of Untitled Goose Game back in 2019, and while Stray may be a literal world away aesthetically from House House’s brilliant puzzler, its influence is at least superficially apparent. In Stray, developed by French software house BlueTwelve Studio, the player takes on the feline lead role, isolated from their family and stranded within an abandoned city populated by robots. The game promises a tantalising glimpse of life as a cat… combined with cyberpunk visuals and sci-fi themes.

Norco – The American Deep South is an evocative setting for a game, and this inbound effort from developer Geography of Robots and publisher Raw Fury appears to have nailed the feel and look of Louisiana in particular. Eschewing modern interfaces in favour of a classical point-and-click style, Norco is a dystopian tale of a lost brother and cyborg police, taking in various vistas from the southern US. Rich in atmosphere and sure to tax the grey cells more than the reflexes, the game offers an intriguing story wrapped up in a quaint retro style.

Super Space Club – Classic retro gaming tropes and styles never really go out of fashion, and the beautifully wild and simple gameplay of Asteroids is no exception. Due for release in 2022 is developer GrahamOfLegend’s fantastic-looking levelling-up of the arcade classic, eschewing the original’s stark vector graphics in favour of a bright and vivid multi-coloured display. Naturally there’s a lot more to this exhilarating shoot-‘em-up, including power-ups, multiple weapons and a galaxy-wide high score table.

Broken Pieces – Broken Pieces evinces the spirit of classic ‘90s horror game Silent Hill in its tale of a mysterious town where all is not quite as it should be. Boasting a unique combat system to go with its array of puzzles and narrative compositions, the ability to manipulate time is at the source of many of the game’s riddles, as well as weather conditions also playing a big part. This will surely be a fascinating addition to this year’s roster of games.

Subtitled Son of The Kung-Fu Master, Devil’s Temple combines the fast-paced hand-and-foot combat of the original with some sparky new backgrounds and sound effects. Fancy a go? Check out the demo.

Windjammers 2 – Released in 1994, the original Neo Geo arcade game Windjammers struck a chord with those looking for an uncomplicated sports simulation. Essentially an updated version of the hoary old classic Pong, the original Windjammers saw players hurling plastic discs at each other, scoring points by striking particular zones behind their opponent. Now, publisher-developer Dotemu is adding special moves, cross-platform multiplayer and more to bring this Neo Geo sensation into the 21st century on 20 January.

Songs of Conquest – Ever since the release of legends such as Civilization and Master of Orion, the turn-based strategy genre has proven popular, especially on PC. Inspired by these classics, Swedish developer Lavapotion (great name!) is working hard on Songs of Conquest, a grand battle between four factions in a mystical and violent world. In the true spirit of the genre, Lavapotion promises massive battles, complex tactics and the opportunity to build a powerful empire, fighting for control of the land against other human players.
