There’s more to the world of wallpaper than pinstripes and florals. Much, much more. In fact, there are so many captivating and creative designs available nowadays, it can feel impossible to choose. Don’t get decision paralysis – get inspired by taking inspiration from these refreshing new patterns and murals by some of the industry’s best designing minds.
We defy you to find anything half as original as this Mudbug Life pattern by Flavor Paper. As hilarious and charming as it is bizarre, the design is an irreverent riff on traditional French toile, as well as nod to the Brooklyn-based brand’s New Orleans roots. Watch as Nola’s iconic crustacean, the crawfish, partakes of various Big Easy pastimes, from cookouts to jam sessions and praying to the porcelain throne after a rowdy night out. We told you it’s irreverent!

Milton & King have been hard at work on in-house designs and artist collaborations lately. Kitty McCall, for instance, distilled the vibes of beach city Encinitas, California into a riotous design for true party people, while Jacqueline Colley created an ode to New York City and all its iconography, from hot dogs to coffee shops, red brick walk-ups to shiny skyscrapers, King Kong to Lady Liberty. Introduced earlier this year, Bowline (pictured) has become a hot commodity with its simplistic lines and nostalgic feel – a subtle nod to the ‘60s in a sleek, modern package.

Her newest designs include ‘Swirl’, a sophisticated, large-scale, tile-like motif perfect for a bathroom, washroom or kitchen space, and ‘Hollywood!’, a stunning geometric design reminiscent of 1960s mod.

“Ah! There is nothing like staying at home, for real comfort.” Jane Austen sure was onto something. Then again, she never spent a year in quarantine staring at her own four walls, and if she had, she likely would have spruced them up with something akin to the Cottage Garden collection by Swedish studio Boråstapeter. The floral designs, hand-painted onto paper sourced from sustainable Northern Europe forestry, blow a breath of English countryside air into a classic Swedish wallpaper aesthetic for a rustic, cosy cottage feel – even in the middle of the city. The collection will be available starting in late March.

Perhaps the seaside is more your thing? For this entrancing new collection, artisan wallpaper purveyors FEATHR allied with artist Melissa Renee, whose technique of layering resin and pigments results in vivid, highly textural works evoking memories of her childhood on the Californian coast. Deep and mysterious, calm and clear, or frothy and alive – however you prefer your slice of coastal heaven, there’s a mural print to take you there.

We could all use a Spanish escape right about now, but since that’s not yet on the cards, Cole & Son is offering the next best thing: a permanent getaway right at home. The Andalusian capital served as inspiration for the 14 captivating designs in this Seville collection by the British heritage brand, celebrating the city’s unique blending of cultural influences throughout the centuries. From the botanical to the architectural, from flamenco fans to azulejo tiles, all you need to complete the Seville experience are tapas and a glass of good Spanish wine.

Graham & Brown is another British heritage brand serving up quality designs that balance the modern with the nostalgic. Ever prolific, they’ve recently added 23 in-house designed wallpapers to their repertoire. The true standout, however, is their Through The Decades collection of four limited edition, re-imagined retro designs released on the occasion of the brand’s 75th anniversary; only 150 rolls of each will be produced, and all profits will be donated to charities chosen by company employees. Our favourite are the dainty 1940s-inspired Parsonage Bloom, the mid-century modern Coronation Craze, and the totally groovy Bohemian Dream reminiscent of the 1970s.

Brother-sister duo Elizabeth and Mike Rees are the third generation carrying on their family’s grand-format printing business – yet they’re anything but old-fashioned. Their New York-based brand Chasing Paper works with artists and designers to dream up bold wallpapers that seem unconfined by the very walls they paper. Recent collaborations include a floral-forward collection by Kelly Ventura, an updated twist on classic stripes and toile by Ariel Orkin, and eye-catching contemporary patterns from Nashville studio New Hat – such as this ‘Currents’ paper, pictured here. Most designs are available as both traditional wallpaper and removable peel-and-stick fabric wallpaper.

Her new collection for Hygge & West encompasses five designs that are emblematic of her signature style, blossoming with lush flora and populated by beautiful exotic birds. Perhaps you’re partial to order over organics? In that case, Juju Papers’ Openwork collection is just the thing. The Portland, Oregon-based brand is helmed by unconventional artist Avery Thatcher, who lends her quirky flair to the collection’s three striking designs: Natural Gifts (pictured), a “hand-guided, imperfectly framed grid in semi-opaque hues”; Dimes, a metallic matrix of hand-printed dime-sized dots; and Mixed Signals, a geometric medley of positive and negative shapes.

The work of British interior designer and artist Lucy Tiffney is instantly recognisable. Wild, colourful and playful, her exuberant designs immediately become the focus of any room they grace. Consider the delightful Pinks with its childlike charm, or Jolly Animaux with its neon jungle and menagerie of adorable inhabitants. For something slightly more sedate and sophisticated, there’s Secret Garden, a scroll pattern that was originally hand-painted by Lucy onto her garden shed door during lockdown in the spring of 2020. Isn’t there something beautiful about enhancing your home with the vibrant creative output of an otherwise dark time?

Fantastical yet refined, this collection puts a dreamlike spin on a nautical theme. Illustrator Sian Zeng brings a host of sea creatures and tiny snorkellers to life with her signature old-meets-new techniques, “mixing traditional Chinese inks with digitally drawn colours, painted via Adobe Fresco using an Apple Pencil on an iPad”. A beautiful choice for a child’s room or any area of creative work and play in the home, the pattern comes in pink or blue-green and is also available as a magnetic wallpaper; lined with magnetic backing, Sian Zeng’s magnetic wallpapers pair with her fanciful line of illustrated magnets to provide kids with hours of imaginative play – and an opportunity to interact with their own decor.
