One-time London broker, now philanthropist and travel enthusiast Leon Logothetis takes viewers with him around the globe as he seeks out the kindness of strangers and returns the favour in ways they never imagined. Dark Tourist – Let your morbid curiosity out to play with this Netflix series centred on a novel category of travel known as dark tourism, an exploration of places associated with death and destruction. New Zealand journalist David Farrier has made a career of his exhaustive research on bizarre human fetishes (check out his 2016 documentary on competitive tickling, Tickled, for a taste). In Dark Tourist, he takes viewers way off the beaten path to meet vampires in New Orleans, soak up radiation in Fukushima, and visit a host of locations that will make your quarantine feel like a five-star hotel.

The Layover – The Layover is no secret to diehard Anthony Bourdain fans. For avid travellers and frequent flyers, however, this show takes a different pace than his hugely popular Parts Unknown, which luxuriates in various locales around the world, wining and dining for the ultimate multisensory experience. In The Layover, the late Food Network star makes the most of a few hours (36 at most) while connecting in cities around the world. As usual, he approaches travel via his taste buds. It’s a marathon sampling of local flavour and friendly strangers before rushing back to catch his flight.

Lost in the Wild – True crime aficionados can really dig into this Travel Channel/ Discovery UK collaboration, which follows journalist and adventure traveller Kinga Philipps and Emmy-nominated filmmaker J.J. Kelley as they voyage to the corners of the earth to explore mysterious deaths and disappearances. Lost in the Wild kicks off in Panama on a hiking trail that turns out to be far more treacherous than it seems. Their travels also take them to Zimbabwe’s storied Mount Nyangani, where legends of man-eating mountains clouds THE hunt for a missing man, as well as to a remote Galapagos Island in search of clues surrounding the 1934 disappearance of an Austrian baroness and her lover.
