The Long Trail, Northeastern US (Vermont to Canada) – As suggested by its name, this so-called “footpath in the wilderness” is more than a leisurely stroll: clocking in at 438 kilometres (272 miles), the Long Trail is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States. End-to-enders who dare to cover the full distance from the Massachusetts-Vermont state line to the Canadian border should reckon with around 20 to 30 days en route, taking in the gorgeous views along the crest of the Green Mountains – including a 160-kilometre (100-mile) shared segment with the Appalachian Trail.

El Chaltén, Argentinian Patagonia – El Chaltén is a tiny mountain village located in southwestern Santa Cruz Province. It’s worth a visit for its ideal position among silvery peaks and glacial lakes in the heart of Patagonia, but it’s also the starting point for several hikes in the extraordinary Los Glaciares National Park – which has earned El Chaltén the title of “Argentina’s National Trekking Capital”. But which trail to pick? If you’re stepping out for your very first hike in this area, the Laguna Torre is a good start, with splendid panoramic views of the Cerro Torre and satellite granite crests, or perhaps Laguna De Los Tres, offering unforgettable panoramas of the Rio de Las Vueltas and Mount Fiz Roy (3,441 metres, 1,300 feet) towering above the cobalt blue waters of the lake.

TransPanama Trail, Panama – Ranking among the world’s longest trails, the TransPanama Trail stretches for 1,200 kilometres (745 miles), and it does what it says: traverses the entire country, from the Colombian border westwards to Costa Rica. The King’s Trail, Swedish Lapland – The 440-kilometre (273-mile) King’s Trail owes its name less to actual blue-blooded rulers than to the sense of strength and pride one gains from completing it. Masoala National Park, Madagascar – Madagascar is known as the “Eighth Continent”, thanks to its size and unique ecosystems resulting from over 80 million years of geographical isolation. Despite human intervention, a huge part of its land mass is still covered by forest, leaving nature lovers with plenty of paths to choose from; the Masoala National Park alone, for example, offers a tremendous number of hiking trails ranging from scenic day walks through dense rainforest and mangroves (home to over 100 kinds of lemurs and frogs), to multi-day hikes crisscrossing the island. Worth mentioning – and tackling – are the coastal path between Alhoatrozana and Antalavia, as well as the one over the needle-shaped rock formations known as Tsingy de Bemaraha, suspended across 100 kilometres (62 miles) of protected landscape.
