Princípe – People in Príncipe describe their home as an island off an island off the coast of Africa. One of the most remote places in the world, Príncipe remains a land that time forgot, having seen very little development – aside from cocoa plantations – during its time as a Portuguese colony and in the decades that followed. Today, it’s emerging as a sustainable tourism success story thanks to a collection of small hotels that have put biodiversity protection and community involvement at the centre of their business model; many of the island’s roughly 8,500 residents work for the hotels or their foundation in one way or another. But that’s not why you visit. You come for the empty crescent beaches, the volcanic peaks shrouded in clouds, the waterfalls rushing down through the greenery – and the creature comforts at the newly redone bungalows of the Bom Bom beach resort. – Staff [Photo: Wirestock/iStock]
