As a new year dawns, bringing with it a full slate of possible fresh hits, it can be tough to tell which shows you should be keeping an eye on. Whether bold new stories coming to the small screen, or old favourites saying farewell, we’ve gathered our pick of the shows to mark in your calendar over the next 12 months.
True Detective: Night Country (14 January) – Anthology crime drama seriesTrue Detective has launched and revived the careers of many a worthy actor, but its next star needs no introduction: Oscar-winner Jodie Foster, who rose to fame as detective Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs, plays a woman leading an investigation into the disappearance of eight people in Alaska. Foster is always box-office quality, and as this season sees her team up with boxer-turned-actress Kali Reis as her partner, we expect to stay on the edge of our seats.

Griselda (25 January) – Sofia Vergara reached worldwide acclaim as part of the ensemble cast of long-running sitcom Modern Family, but now it’s time for the Colombian superstar to get serious. Griselda sees her play Griselda Blanco, an infamous drug lord who became known as the “Cocaine Godmother” in the 1980s. Given the success of drug cartel dramas like Narcos, a female-led series that shows a different side to a well-known star may very well be one of the surprise hits of the year, possibly giving Vergara the kind of revival enjoyed by Matthew McConaughey a decade ago.

The Regime (Spring 2024) – Not content with being a cinema great, Kate Winslet has been killing it on the small screen recently, with shows such as The Mare of Eastown and I Am alongside her daughter, Mia Threapleton. She continues her run with this story about a fictional authoritarian European regime, with Winslet playing the person in charge whose power is beginning to crumble. As if one star wasn’t enough, Hugh Grant and Andrea Riseborough also appear in the satire, which promises to have echoes of political comedies like The Thick of It and Veep.

House of the Dragon, Season 2(Mid-2024) – Fans were divided as to whether we really needed a Game of Thrones prequel, but House of the Dragon arguably proved doubters wrong with a scintillating show that portrays the early(ish) days of the Targaryen royal dynasty. Making stars of Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy, the show returns for a second season in the middle of the year. Little is known so far, but a trailer for the season promises all-out war and a more compact show, with eight episodes – compared to Season 1’s ten – meaning there may be even more twists and turns!

Mary & George (TBC) – A number of costume dramas are heading our way this year, with the third season of Bridgerton making a lot of headlines in particular. However, for us the most exciting period drama of the year will be this miniseries based on Benjamin Woolley’s book The King’s Assassin. Julianne Moore stars as Mary Villiers, a 17th-century English countess who manipulates her son (Nicholas Galitzine) into seducing the king to gain power. Those who enjoyed the palace intrigue of dramas like Wolf Hall will be absolutely enthralled by this new show, especially considering that Moore is always guaranteed to offer jaw-dropping moments. Will the show’s seven episodes be enough??

American Horror Story: Delicate, Part 2 (TBC) – The final season of Stranger Things would have made this list, but delays in filming have meant it’s more likely we will see that in early 2025. However, if you’re looking for horror, who better to turn to than a titan of TV chills? Delicate is the latest incarnation of the American Horror Story franchise, and Part One saw global celebrity Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts in the story of an actress who finds herself pursued by a mysterious figure. Reviews for Part One have been good, with Kardashian praised for her performance, making this second half one everyone will want to tune in for!
