The Standard Scarf – This is the most common winter accessory, and what most people think of when they hear the term “scarf”. Designed as a long, narrow rectangle, standard scarves come in unlimited fabrics and patterns and may have fun details like fringe or pom poms on the ends. Most commonly worn draped, wrapped or tied around the neck in conjunction with a winter coat, more and more standard scarves are being worn as fashion accessories that stay on even after the coat comes off. The Blanket Scarf – A blanket scarf is exactly what it sounds like: a scarf big enough to be a blanket. Although some are bigger than others, generally speaking blanket scarves are a large rectangle about the size of an average throw or lap blanket. Blanket scarves are versatile in that they can be worn around the neck much like a standard scarf, but they can also be worn over the shoulders as a wrap or shawl, or even draped over and belted as a top. Blanket scarves can feel bulky, so it’s important to experiment and find a fit that works for you. next.co.uk, zara.com, asos.com

The Infinity Scarf – Infinity scarves are defined by the fact that they have no ends – they’re an “infinite” circle that goes over the head and loops around the neck. Much like standard rectangle scarves, infinity scarves come in all different weights and textures, and some are more versatile than others when it comes to wearing options. Infinity scarves can be worn as an outdoor accessory only (comes off at the door with your coat) or as an indoor accessory meant to stay on as part of your outfit. Infinity scarves are popular for their “throw on and go” ease in styling. loft.com, sundancecatalog.com, macys.com

Snoods And Cowls – The terms “snood” and “cowl” are often used interchangeably with “infinity scarf”, but while they do all feature an endless circle design, snoods and cowls sit higher on the neck than infinity scarves (often reaching up to the chin) and do not wrap around the neck more than once. Cowls go around the neck only, while snoods are often designed to also be pulled up as a hood if needed. Cowls and snoods are popular with those who want warmth without a lot of bulk or dangling ends to deal with, and are most often reserved for outdoor use only. clubmonaco.com, asos.com, neimanmarcus.com

The Pashmina – Pashmina is a fine type of cashmere wool produced from a specific breed of Persian goat, so any true pashmina scarf is one made with pashmina wool. The most luxurious pashminas are 100% wool, but blends are available at lower price points. Pashmina scarves are usually larger rectangle styles, wearable wrapped around the neck or draped over the shoulders like a shawl, but other styles can be found as well. Due to the butter-soft nature of the fabric, pashminas naturally lend themselves to luxury and are a good winter accessory choice for formal as well as casual styles. thewoolcompany.co.uk, ukpashmina.co.uk

The Neckerchief – Also called bandanas or neck scarves, neckerchiefs are small square scarves usually made of thinner fabric like silk or satin. Sailors and cowboys wore neckerchiefs for practical reasons, but contemporary style sees these scarves making a comeback as a sleek and bulk-free way to accessorise with colour as well as fight off cool indoor drafts. Worn either wrapped around the neck and knotted or tied and left to hang as a triangular “bib”, neckerchiefs can also be worn on the wrist, tied at the waist, or as a handbag accessory. freepeople.com, asos.com, loft.com

The Cape – Capes have been making regular appearances on fashion runways in recent years, and are a trendy alternative to the usual winter coat. Traditionally designed as a semi-circle that ties or fastens at the neck, some modern day versions also have sleeves and button or zip closures down the front. Capes are especially suited to formal occasions where a regular coat would obscure or crush attire underneath, but casual styles are making a surge as well. Fun Fact: Capes should fall somewhere between the waist and knees, cloaks hit below the knee, and capelets cover only the shoulders. nordstrom.com, asos.com, johnlewis.com

The Poncho – Ponchos are a casual alternative to a lightweight jacket, or some lighter styles are worn as an indoor layer much like a sweater. Ponchos at their simplest are a large rectangle with a hole cut in the centre for the head, worn as a pull-over style with an equal drape down the front and back. Ponchos have been increasingly popular in recent years, and as such, designers have been getting creative with the styling. True ponchos are pull-over only, but many of today’s ponchos are actually a blend of poncho, cape and coat elements, with features like open fronts and defined sleeves growing in popularity. zara.com, nordstrom.com, asos.com

Wraps And Shawls – “Wrap” and “shawl” are generic terms that encompass many of the other styles on our list, and are a good catch-all for today’s modern styles that incorporate multiple features and don’t fit neatly into a more specific category. Wraps and shawls are generally defined as “a piece of fabric worn loosely over the shoulders and arms, and sometimes the head”. For example a pashmina could be called a wrap or shawl, as could a blanket scarf, a stole, and even some capes and ponchos, depending on the style. marksandspencerlondon.com, nordstrom.com, frenchconnection.com
