You’re making a list, you’re checking it twice, you’re gonna check if the weather’s nasty or nice… but before you pack, check our handy list of things to bring on your winter travels. From innovative tech to warm clothing, best beauty buys to smart accoutrements, useful tools to fun toys, they all go on the “good” list.
For Winter City Trips… Whether you’re heading to a single destination or city hopping all over the European continent, you’ll want to travel light. That means wearing your bulkiest items while in transit, and packing only the most compact and streamlined of capsule wardrobes. Stick to neutrals or one coherent colour scheme and multiple layers – a pair of black leggings, a black long-sleeve, a choice of mix-and-match casual and dressy mid-layers, plus eye-catching accessories. Hats, scarves, gloves and statement jewellery are the simplest way to stay warm and stylish, switch up your look and add a splash of colour to dreary days.
For Festive Market Weekend Trips… Mulled wine, fairy lights and the smell of baked treats wafting through narrow lanes lined with wooden market huts – the Christmas markets of central Europe are very precisely engineered to warm the heart. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t get cold physically, so come prepared. No matter how warmly you dress, all that shuffling from stall to stall and standing around soaking up the atmosphere will inevitably lead to icy toes and frozen fingers. Luckily, the solution can be as simple as packing a refillable Zippo Hand Warmer and a pair of rechargeable insoles. Both will keep you feeling toasty inside and out, while avoiding the unnecessary waste caused by single-use warmer pouches.
For Fun With The Kids… Whether you’re taking the little ones on a city trip, a skiing holiday or a family visit, you never know when you’ll find yourself near a snow-covered hill screaming to be turned into a sledge run. A proper sledge is pretty hard to fit into regular holiday luggage, but a thin plastic slope slider is a worthwhile addition to your packing list. These cheap and cheerful toys come in the shape of snow saucers, snow scooters or mini-snowboards – and are all good for hours of fun.<
For Walking Through Snow And On Slippery Slopes… If you’re not exactly going on a winter hiking adventure, but still want to be prepared for a walk through the snow, you can make do without bulky hiking shoes or winter boots. Simply pack a pair of high-top sneakers or other boots with good tread. Worn with a pair of waterproof socks, layered over a second pair of thermal socks if necessary, any shoe can go from comfy to cosy in a flash. Don’t have shoes or boots that offer enough grip? Pack a pair of crampons to keep yourself from slipping and sliding all over your holiday destination.
For Cold Snaps… Sure, you’re expecting it to be cold, but even in winter, some days are colder than others. An ultra-light packable down jacket or waistcoat is the perfect item to bring for unpredictable weather. Wear it as your only jacket on chilly days, inside a winter coat on freezing ones, and under a thin raincoat during a shower. It packs down small, is incredibly light and even doubles as a cosy travel pillow on long flights or train trips.
For Outdoor Adventures… If you’re skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, or engaging in any other type of winter sport, low temperatures are probably your biggest worry, so you’ll be kitted out with all the necessary cold-weather gear. However, don’t forget that the sun can also be particularly unforgiving in winter, when UV rays are reflected by the snow, especially when we find ourselves outdoors at high altitudes. Protect your eyes, your skin and your lips whenever you’re outside, even when it’s overcast. When choosing cosmetics, avoid water-based formulas that can freeze on your skin.
For Winter Wellness… If you don’t live in a climate that delivers proper winter realness, it can be easy to forget how dehydrating the season can be. A combination of dry air outside and heating indoors wreaks havoc on most peoples’ skin, so be prepared by packing all things moisturising – even if they aren’t part of your regular beauty regime. Again, choose oil-based over water-based formulas. Body moisture and face oil bars are a handy, packaging-free and easily packable alternative to regular creams and lotions. If the heated air indoors in particular is giving your skin a hard time, place a saucer filled with water on top of a radiator at night to humidify the air.
For Holiday Shopping Trips… In many parts of the world, it’s holiday shopping season. Even if you aren’t on the hunt for presents, the lavish window displays and seasonal offers can be hard to resist, so – no matter where you’re headed – be prepared for a bit of retail therapy. Of course, you don’t want to get caught in a downpour or snowstorm with your new purchases, so bring a waterproof day pack. When you aren’t filling it with goodies, you can use it to stash warmer layers when you get too warm indoors. [Photo: Rains Backpacks]
For Winter Business Trips… The cold isn’t just hard on our skin and immune system, it also takes its toll on our devices. The batteries in your phone, tablet and laptop won’t last as long in lower temperatures and may cut out unexpectedly. Always carry a rechargeable battery pack to give them a boost.
For Socialising… Winter is flu season. Your immune system may already be compromised by travel and a change in climate, so don’t let nasty germs and viruses get to you. If you’re in a crowded destination, they’ll be lingering on door knobs, furniture and all the hands you shake in the course of a day. The easiest way to protect yourself is to wash your hands regularly and use hand sanitiser in between.
