Silo
The Silo Rooftop, Cape Town, South Africa – Sure, it’s a stunning rooftop terrace offering arguably the best views of a city that boasts a plethora of breathtaking vistas. Yes, it sits atop one of the country’s most eagerly awaited and widely discussed hotel/museum openings of the past decade. Of course, it’s stylish and elegant. However, the Silo Rooftop is often touted as a bar, sheepishly hiding the fact that it offers a small, but solid menu of surprisingly affordable, extremely delicious salads, sandwiches and sharing platters.

Takpark
Takpark, Stockholm, Sweden – Sweden may not be the first place that springs to mind as a prime rooftop destination, but bear in mind that the Nordic country isn’t just cold and dark during winter, it’s also pleasantly sunny and endlessly bright in summer, which is when locations like Takpark come into their own. The rooftop park (the literal translation of its name) is operated by Urban Deli, a popular group of local eateries. It’s not only the largest of its kind in the city, but also offers 360-degree views of the city on those long midsummer nights.

Bureau
Restaurant Bureau, Amsterdam, Netherlands – For an al fresco dining experience off the beaten tourist track, head to B. Amsterdam, an abandoned office block turned start-up hub and coworking space. On its top floor, surrounded by a thriving rooftop garden, Restaurant Bureau feeds locals, workers and visitors alike. The seasonal menu is cosmopolitan with a Dutch touch, and uses plenty of homegrown ingredients. Although this is decidedly not a tourist trap, the crowd is eclectic and everyone’s welcome.

Dachgarten
Dachgarten-Restaurant im Deutschen Bundestag, Berlin, Germany – The food and the view are not the only things to recommend this rooftop restaurant at the heart of the German capital. A breakfast, lunch or dinner reservation also means fast-track entry to the parliament building, one of the city’s prime landmarks. Skip the (often hours-long) queues and do your sightseeing, history learning and dining in one fell swoop. As the restaurant is run by the famous Munich-based delicatessen company Käfer, we highly recommend you try the Bavarian specialities on the menu.

Hiltl
Hiltl Dachterrasse, Zurich, Switzerland – Vegetarian, vegan or omni, there’s no getting past Hiltl. The fact that the “oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world” now operates a total of seven restaurants across Zurich is a pretty clear indication that even carnivores like to indulge in their delicious meat-free fare. The city-centre rooftop restaurant offers a chilled-out green space with views of ritzy Bahnhofstrasse, but friendly vibes that are a world away from one of the most expensive slivers of retail real estate in the world.

Barbes
Brasserie Barbès, Paris, France – This rooftop may not offer the quintessential Paris view (no Seine, no Eiffel Tower, no ruin of Notre Dame), but it is quintessentially Parisian in every other way. The interior serves brasserie realness with a hint of hipster art across four floors, the crowd is a solid mix of chic locals of all ages and nonchalant Montmartre boho types, the menu offers all the casually decadent French fare your heart desires at not-too-steep prices. The view of nearby Sacré-Cœur isn’t too shabby, either.

Prince
The Prince, Tel Aviv, Israel – Tel Aviv is not just the nightlife capital of Israel, it’s also the ultimate rooftop restaurant hotspot. The Prince ticks all the mandatory boxes by serving great food and drinks with even better views – and more, by serving it all in a somewhat hidden albeit central location, atop an old building, with a side of excellent music, live shows and art performances.

Juliette
Juliette, Brooklyn, New York, USA – This “American in Paris” French bistro has been a Williamsburg constant since before the hipsters took over. In the past decade, the queues may have gotten longer, the punters may have changed, but the solid menu, friendly service and delightful décor have remained the same. Manhattan may offer more jaw-dropping rooftop terraces with unbeatable views, but we’ll gladly trade the parade of poseurs and sky-high prices for the comfort food and neighbourhood feel of this reliable Bedford Avenue staple.

Perch
Perch, Los Angeles, USA – With its endless summer weather and a sizeable amount of the population working in industries that require extensive professional schmoozing, it comes as no surprise that LA is full of attractive rooftop terraces. First, you need to choose between a view of the ocean, the hills or the downtown skyline. If you want the latter, try Perch in DTLA. In addition to reliably satisfying food and drinks, excellent views of Pershing Square below and skyscrapers all around, it offers unique extras like live music and fire pits.

Sarita
Sarita Colonia Restaurante, Santiago de Chile, Chile – This Peruvian-Asian fusion restaurant serves delicious food and unexpected flavour combinations, but what is truly remarkable is the place itself. The large, atmospherically lit space layers kitsch and camp, religious and cultural references, peppered with a mix of boudoir deco and ecclesiastical accoutrements worthy of a shrine to the (non-recognised) Peruvian saint that lends her name to the restaurant. The rooftop is just the icing on the cake.

Wanderlust
Wanderlust, Bangkok, Thailand – Others are higher and more spectacular – in fact, Bangkok’s rooftops like to outdo each other by claiming titles such as “world’s highest Champagne bar”, “highest beer bar” or “highest glass skywalk”. If you prefer to enjoy your al fresco meal, the view and the atmosphere without all the fuss, head for urban hangout Wanderlust. The rooftop restaurant and bar is styled like a picnic spot, which sets the tone for laid-back vibes, often accompanied by live music, and a crowd that skews a lot more local than a lot of the city’s other hotspots.

Naked
Naked In The Sky, Melbourne, Australia – Don’t spend all your time in Melbourne hunting down elusive bars hidden down labyrinthine alleys. Instead, look up, where many of the city’s best dining and boozing locations are hidden in plain sight. Of course, you still may have to head down a dark alley to find the entrance sometimes… not so for Naked In The Sky, a perennially popular spot with wrap-around terrace, Spanish food and a buzzy atmosphere to get you in the mood for a night out on debaucherous Brunswick Street below.
